How To Create A 'read Only' File?

Featured Replies

Can anyone tell me how i can create a 'Read Only' file in 'Word'?

I want to create a file that can be sent by email and opened by the recipient but can't be changed. I know this can be done in a fdf. file but i want to do it in word.

Anyone know?

Cheers

If you are using MS Office 2007:

- Click the Review tab

- Click protect document -> Restrict formatting and editing

If you are using an older version, they I have no idea, been using 2007 for years.

Protect Document feature in Word 2007 - can make a document read only. Go to the developer tab and click protect document.

I think you can just Right Click on the file after it is created and look at properties and make it read only with the options you will find.

Thanks very much for the replies.

All these repies are very good and will work to a limited extent, but I do not believe there is a way of stopping a determined recipient from making a read/write copy of the document for what ever purposes.

There are many tools available to crack M$ passwords and even something as simple as printing the documentt to a PDF file with a free utility will (allegedly!) give you an editable version, which can be imported back in to word later.

Changing the read write atrtibutes of the file as suggested by one person may not even work after the file has been emailed.

Depending on your requirements you may be better advised to look at some form of Hash check or other method that wil not revent somebody from changing the files, but will at least ensure that you know it has been changed.

Remember "Locks only stop Honest men"

make from your text in word document a jpeg or gif via HARDCOPY or similar programm. After you insert this image in any WORD document as you would insert any other picture or graphic. :)

In Word 2003 (OK, I am a dinosaur)

- Click the Tools tab

- Click protect document -> Editing Restrictions

I think you can just Right Click on the file after it is created and look at properties and make it read only with the options you will find.

But anyone can change it back, the OP wants to prevent it from being changed by the recipient.
