Cable Internet Connection With No Phone Line?

Im moving into a new condo soon, I was looking at setting up a phone line with TOT and then having maxnet premier for my internet. Apparently though at this building Maxnet can be used WITHOUT having a phoneline and number set up with TOT, this is a cable net connection NOT wifi. I dont understand how this is possible, can someone explain? Also would it be better (in terms of connection stability and speed) to get the TOT line setup?

Here in Chiang Mai, I had TOT for 2 years, using their "best high speed" and had nothing but trouble constantly. A couple of months ago I switched to CAT, which uses a fiber optic connection, not a phone line, and have had zero problems since, and it's almost twice as fast for downloads. As far as I'm concerned TOT stands for Totally Off Track when it comes to internet service.

The condo most likely has cable set-up for every room and share the internet they get from TOT or TRUE. So, it'll probably be like those wifi connection that you can see at most apartment here in Thailand with crappy internet speed. But, it really depends. If they get business line or something similar with reliable ISP (relatively speaking here) and not many people in your condo are using it, then who knows you might get a decent connection. :)

First, you wouldn't be able to get Maxnet (now called 3BB) on a TOT line.

In the provinces you'd need a TT&T phone line for that, but in Bkk TT&T has no rights (concession) to install phone service/numbers.

So they circumvented this problem by simply pulling a phone cable into your place, but without phone signal and without an assigned phone number. The cable only carries ADSL signal, through which they can supply you with internet.

In Pattaya for example, both CAT and True have been doing this for a while now, as both have no rights to supply phone service.

TT&T or 3BB as well. "No free numbers" but with a little grease it works.

We ended up with two internet providers now (BTV 10 MBit and TT&T 3 Mbit Premier). BTV is very fast for local things, but it seems like they are blocking/traffic shaping torrents and a few other things. So basically this is a no go. Thinking of cancelling them soon, but I like to watch the reliabilty of TT&T in the new location.

Cheers

Where do they 'pull' this cable from? I will be on the 19th floor....

The cable will come from the closest DSLAM they have in your area.

Nowadays they have so-called micro-DSLAM's all over town. Looks like this:

Cable can be rather long and still give you fast speeds, especially if they pull a new cable just for the ADSL service (i.e. no 20 year old existing, taped together, corroded cable).

As you can see from the above graph, a 2 km long line could theoretically give you up to 14 Mbps! So the distance going up 19 floors is no issue whatsoever.

Thank you for this explanation that I was looking for.

I understand now why they propose high speed internet without a phone line.

Do you which internet is usually the best in Pattaya? True, Maxnet, or Tot ?

Because Tot as a 590 thb promotion until the end of this month, but I don't know about True and Maxnet ?
