I have been here in Bangkok 7 months now, I come from England, I am 26. I have a Thai boyfriend, we have only been together 2 months. I read a book called Thailand Fever - anyone read it? well all it did was scare me about my relationship, is it true most Thai men sleep with prostitutes? is anyone in the same situation as me, need some advice from the girls. If you wanna email me - [email protected]. x

is it true most Thai men sleep with prostitutes?

It is not true. Most men sleep with prostitutes.

No, it is not true.

The fact is, that when with prostitutes men, Thai or otherwise, very rearly sleep.

If your man is getting plenty of sleep at home, it is unlikely he will feel the need to sleep somewhere else.

i agree wiht make :o

Jekkifer, as a thai male, i will give you an honest answer. What you fear is true, many thai men (and many asian men in general) have frequented prostitutes. The AIDS epidemic that started in 1988 was a direct result of the men having uprotected sex with prostitutes and spreading it to their wives and girlfriends. However, since then, fear and knowledge of AIDS has caused a slow decline in the number prostitutes and men who frequent prostitutes. Do a google on the subject and you will find plenty of evidence to see the facts for yourself.

As i've said in another post, i have many thai male friends who still have sex with prostitutes so as far as i can see, the trend hasn't stopped. This is not just amongst the under-educated since most of my friends are like me, college educated and young (20s and 30s).

My advice to you: don't have sex with any thai unless you can verify from test results that they are not infected. And if they aren't willing to test, move on unless you want to take a chance with your life. PS. i'm also speaking from the point of view of knowing thais who have died from AIDS.

don't have sex with any thai

I hope this won't make you think having sex with non-thais is safe. :o

It's not generally unsafe if you are protected, regardless of race/nationality.

As most on this forum know I am not the best to give advice on this topic, but if you genuinely need a little chat you can ask me. I have been married twice to Thai men and have lived here many years. So whatever I can share with you I will. Message me here or PM me if I can be of help. I would hate to think of you out there alone on this.

As a public health professional active in AIDs I have to tell you: 1) Yes, most Thai men do frequent prostitutes (ditto Cambodian) 2) AIDs is very prevalent among Thai prostitutes 3) 1 + 2 = very high risk if you have unprotected sex. 4) Same is true of many if not most of foreign men in Thailand.

As one of the previous responses said, you need to be very careful.

This is true even if he's got a negative HIV test result in hand....tests are positive only 3-6 months after infection. In the early stages a person will test negative but can still infect others.

So it is very unwise to have unprotected (i.e. no condom) sex until 6 months have elapsed since the guy tested negative and you are sure he hasn't been with anyone else in the meantime...so sure you're willing to bet your life on it.

By the way, many many years ago I too got involved with a Thai man I didn't know was married. After I found out, I had the following concversation with a Thai woman friend:

Me: He's married.

She: I know.

Me: You already knew? How?

She: Because all men his age are.

It's true. Rare indeed is an unmarried Asian male over 30. They may even assume you know they are married even though they haven't told you....

That's right, and this goes back to different cultural expectations and assumptions. In Asia, it is largely viewed as a male right to have extramarital sex. Prostitution in Thailand has always catered first and foremost to the local population. Up until the late 1990s, it was largely quoted by all sources that 95% of Thai males had their first sexual experience with prostitutes, and close to the same proportion continued to frequent prostitutes the rest of their adult lives. And polygamy, concubinage, and mia nois have always been a part of the culture.

Now it is more like 75% of the locals patronize prostitutes, decreasing due to the high incidence of AIDS, and the fact that more couples have pre-marital sex. There are more "gigs" or loose, casual relationships, and mia nois are yet to go out of style.

Jekkifer - I personally haven't read the book Thailand Fever but why let a few pages scare you about your relationship? It is still obviously early days with your relationship but IMO it carn't be that stable if reading a book has given you feelings that are questioning your relationship. The answer for that question I carn't answer for you but what I can say is that the possibility is there. You're in Thailand and it is no secret prostitutes are lurking. If you question your boyfriend about this he is unlikey to admit, but behaviour out of the ordinary is quite easy to spot (females are good at that). You know the call, not answering the phone, coming back late etc etc.

But if you are having to go to extremes such as monitoring your boyfriends actions then trust really isn't there in your relationship. If you were happy with your relationship before picking up that book then forget about that book. All the posters so far have given great replys so I wouldn't suggest forgetting everything just keep a few of these posts in mind.

It is not early days in her relationship as there were 5 months between her first and 2nd post in this thread.

She has obviously now discovered that he was married and decided to share that with us.

I don't think it is a troll as I looked at her profile and she has been offline since her last post - a troller would HAVE to look at the reactions.

Anyway, adding to this thread....

I haven't known many Thai men with Farang gf/wives, but every one, without exception either has a Thai gf or goes with girls from the Karaoke.

A Thai man I know, met a farang girl last year and so far she has managed to get through something like 4 million Baht. As soon as she is off back to Uk the local girls are practically queuing up to climb in his bed. He is fairly young and now apparently rich. Village gossip has said that she found out about one and has forgiven him and told him not to do it again. The villagers think she is lovely but stupid. I tried to warn her about the amount of money she was spending, but no avail.

Most men, whatever race, would find it very difficult to say no to sex if it is handed to them on a plate. Prostitutes are cheap in Thailand and not the same extent of stigma attached the same as in Uk.

Myself, I can't be bothered, I'm happy with my homelife and have no inclination to look for sex elsewhere. But I am a normal man and if a beautiful girl jumped into bed with me (dreaming, I know) I would unlikely be strong enough to boot her out.

As with most married men, the signs are usually there, you just have to choose to see them. It is fairly rare for a thai man over 30 to be unmarried but they do exist, also, most thai men I know ( And I know a fair few) are too good looking to have to go with prossies & actually don't like being around the bg's or karaoke places as they can get it for free.

Research vs real life expereinces??? There are facts/reports/studies on everything which can go in any direction in any favour, as with all relationships in life you have to take a chance & trust your own judgement & make informed descisions on the indiviual. Sometimes your wrong, sometimes your right. It's called life.

Yes, that's right. Research vs. experience - both confirming the other. And now the op has both.

Sowwie. I assumed the thread was recent and replyed going on her first post, my mistake.

Wrong conception, I think.
