Again, it is shameful that the US-Navy advertises so openly that the main reason for them to come to Thailand is Rest & Recreation.

In normal diplomatic wording it should have been called a courtesy visit from the US-Navy to Thailand.

According to my wife and father in law, and myself, the Vietnam era is long gone, and the US should behave like any respectful state.

Advertising the R&R so blatantly is very degrading for the Thai people.

:):D R & R Its 'Rest & Recuperation' from long term deployments, in their case Dili, East Timor patrolling for Priates to keep you Yacht owners safe. I have a better term for it - I & I Intercourse & Intoxication - BTW those 3500 Americans will spend between 5 & 7,000,000 $$$ Advertising R&R 'degrading' for the Thai People??? spread enough money around and the degradation does an about face . It takes a very special mind to consider rest and recreation as something dirty and degrading. I suppose when HANSNL goes on vacation there is no rest or recreation involved........Never miss an opportunity to slam the U.S.

The military from other countries visit the U.S. for R&R and no one considers it degrading.

I am sure that the Americans will behave as respectful as citizens of Hansnl's country but at least wait until the disgrace themselves before the slam.

By the way the correct English grammar is "according to my wife, father-in-law and me"..... Ta.

....I guess there is usually more sex going on on board the ship than there was in their hotels.....

Talking to the guys from the Ronald Reagan, they said that 13 women were sent home on maternity leave within the first few months of setting sail.

....If they were trying this on with us they must of been really scamming the sailors. I'm suprised that there wasn't a lot of bars being wrecked

when it came to pay up. When I was their age if it had happened to me and my mates they would have known about it.

This topic also came up. The sailors are instructed in detail on how to act when ashore. It is explained that they are ambassadors from their country and should behave accordingly. Almost all do. Wrecking a bar is out of the question. Also, in addition to actual shore patrol (what the US Navy calls their military police) there are numerous "SLG's" Shore Liason Gaurds. These are regular sailors that roam the tourist areas helping keep an eye on their brethren in exchange for more time ashore, but no alcohol for them. You'll see them in the polos with "SLG" on them.

Yes it was the SLGs that I was refering to, excuse my lack of knowledge of US military terms.

The friend I was with is ex US military and explained all the ambassador stuff to me and fair play to them all the ones I saw were

pretty well behaved. Of course some the posts on the thread have been made by experts who were not there, they should leave these

kids alone. Some time in the previous year and a half I spent an afternoon with a group of young US millitary guys in Pattaya in a bar on

beach road and they were one of the nicest groups of people I've ever met whilest out drinking. A lot of laughs and very respectful to

everyone there customers and the bar girls

Are there serious ladyboys ??? So why do they have to come from Pattaya to Phuket to welcome the American navy? The fact they behave like this is proof that they are "commercial" ladyboys and ready to do everything for the "money". They are worse than prostitutes.

Round them up and put them all in jail for a while. They're all just good for nothing unless for stealing and for robbing innocent victims. They are all sick anyway, if not between their legs, then between their ears. And they have to pay off their surgery because their dick isn't worth anything for sale: even the street dogs do not like!

Get rid of them... and save the world from katoeys, Toms and alike... :):D

Newbie, come on... Take it easy. There is nothing wrong in this statement! I have met myself these navies walking all over the hood of my car with their big steel framed boots because they wanted to step down from the pick-up whre they were sitting in and my car was a bit too close to this pick-up in the traffic jam...

I have never seen the American MP so quickly on the scene like then!

Hold the phone, our HansNL maybe a Nederlander, his profile says he lives in Khoen Kahn - no where near Patong Beach his interests are:

Very diverse! politics, science, nature, Thailand, shooting, the other sexe, computers, 4x4, etc, etc, ad absurdum

shooting, the other sexe?? hmmmm maybe he is a little ticked off that the Police are finally rounding up cross dressing Khatoeys and his post

has nothing to do with the US Navy visiting Phuket.............

Oh in case your wondering, I co-owned a bar in Pattaya from 1972-1977 - in those 'Vietnam Era' days, the ships were always welcome, made us a lot of money, met a lot of fine Americans but guess what?? The navy even chartered buses to take the boys in blue to Bangkok for a few days......they had a choice and mst went to bangkok, after 3 months at sea, the last thing they wanted to see was a sandy beach (Yes, we could actually see the Beach in Pattaya in those days)

Ok, quiet down boys and get back to your desks. The witticism is underwhelming. Lots of targets for jokes, ha ha ha.

Seriously though, there should be alerts re; criminal lady boys on an on-going basis. Not just the punks who run to wherever the action is (this time it's Phuket), but the resident punks, whether they overdress like cheap whores or not.

If the beach resort administrations and cops can ever quit their tittering & giggling at men dressed as women, perhaps they'll get to the not-so-funny business of cleaning up their streets.

US military guys make easy targets for rip-offs, because they're quite naive, they have a lot of spending money, and their hormones are in over-drive.

If you want to laugh about a mob of rip offs taking advantage of, lying to, and stealing from military guys on leave, then go ahead. After your last guffaws snorkle away, perhaps you'll get behind a decent effort by local authorities to rid Thailand's beach resorts of the endemic scum that destroy many peoples' holidays.

Well said my friend, Phuket at present is a bed of thieves for tourists. From Tuk Tuks to Katoys to bar bills and bar fines. Rentals of anything from motorbikes to jet-skies is a big problem that can ruin a vacation in Thailand.

What is not realized is these 2-3000 visitors from the USA will bring back stories from their R+R in Thailand. Good or Bad ! The local Tourist Police know this and it appears that the Ladyboys are a major problem to visitors. They have the police reports from visitors.

R&R is an extremely innocuous term. R&R, Shore Leave, a break from duties for chrissakes you moron! How do you read so much into it? Sounds like you need some R&R yourself or maybe you are becoming sclerotic.

Posted
Perhaps you know more than I do regarding the meaning of "R&R" but why should it be "degrading to to your wife and father-in-law" that the US Navy takes R&R in Patong? It's as if you're blaming the victim rather than the perpetrator of a crime yet to be committed.

It's almost as you're saying (and I've heard rationized by the Thais before) that if the foreigner were not here, any crimes perpetuated against the foreigners (or accidents involving foreigners) would not have occurred so, in essence, it is the foreigner's fault for existing or being here.

Please go back into the hole that you (and your inlaws) crawled out from. Excuse me for my lack of "diplomatic wording".

Your lack of diplomatic wording is spot on. You and several others have shot this poster down in flames exactly as they deserve.

I agree with this. The only reason this idea is getting so much negative reaction on this forum is because many posters here probably met their wives in this 'R&R'. The US knows exactly what's going on here, the generals made a probably explicit deal with the Thai government for their men to get sex in exchange for supporting thai tourism. It's absolutely disgusting and enforces popular notions of the military as low class scumbags. Let me ask this, if the navy guys are so innocent, why don't we just give them a bunch of booze and have them R&R in some nice isolated national park? Oh I forgot, bars are 'more fun' for obvious reasons. I rest my case.

The American service men spoiled beautiful places like Phuket and Pattaya over the years turned them into huge cesspits and brothels exploited the general population. Thet deserve everything they are going to receive. They think the whole world is thier toilet and think can shit anywhere and on anyone whenever they want because they think they are superior to the rest of us. The ladyboys will only be doing to them what they have been doing to the rest of the world for years. Hope they all get a dose while they are at it.

I think they are still sore from WW 2 when they lost all their women to the handsome and fun guys from the USA who saved their ass.

Saved thier arse from who? Don't forget Thailand declared war on the US and great britian in January 1942 so they were the enemy.

It's rest and relaxation and it's not the U.S. Navy advertising it. That's the newspaper's editorializing.

And what part of "rest and relaxation" is disrespectful to you?

When someone says "I'm taking some well-deserved R&R." it does not mean "I'm going whore-mongering.

Raise your hand if you hate america too.

You're a sick one. Most of the servicemen these days are from poor and low income families just trying to get some skills to make it in this world. And many of them are minorities who are culturally sensitive.

And have you forgotten that it was the American servicemen that liberated Asia. If it weren't for the U.S. everybody in Thailand would be speaking Japanese now and working as indentured servants.

There's a big difference between the soldiers in the 40's who were in a World War fighting for the survival of the U.S., and trashy young modern kids doing 'training exercises' in the region from which they apparently need a "R&R" break to inseminate the impoverished locals working in the bars. There is absolutely no comparison between the poverty of the US and poverty in Thailand, and the girls in the brothels shouldn't be serviced by any country, even if the customers are "culturally sensitive" as you claim. Again, I ask you, why doesn't the military just give them a bunch of booze and a nice isolated island to party on....? they NEED the bar scene to do R&R?

It's called socialising, it's good to change your environment occasionally.

And just why is that shameful?

When ships have been out at sea and sailors and Marines have not had the opportunity to relax off the ship, it is common for it to pull into a port where the men and women can get off the ship for some, well, rest and relaxation. That can be in Phuket, Korea, Hawaii, Dubai, Tangiers, Hong Kong, Bahrain, Naples, New York, Vancouver, Halifax, Perth, Haifa, Rio ...the list goes on. I really don't see how this is disrepectful to the Thai people. Are the advertisements paid for by the Thai government to try and increase Thai tourism disrespectful as well?

Hey Sven, do you know any servicemen? Do you know they are trashy? Have you mingled with them? I know quite a few of them who are quite upstanding young men, which is more than I can say for the average farang living in Thailand and a good many who come here for sex-cations. Those are truly the people who are taking advantage of the indigent bar girls and prostitutes.

The whole idea of shore-leave is for the soldiers to be in society again and not just stuck on a boat with the same people they see everyday. They can SCUBA dive, play volleyball, drink whatever. Where else in the region are they going to go for fun? Malaysia, Indonesia, where Muslim religious fanatics would put them in danger?

On another note, I've seen how bar girls and gogo girls eyes light up everytime YOUNG guys enter their places of work. They're happy when guys in their 20s show because at least for one night they don't have to service some fat old, drunk retired Swedish slob with a gut the size of a beach ball and a fistful of kronor.

Why do you think the US navy drop anchor in Phuket ? To admire the scenery collect flowers for pressing and do some snorkelling .. :)

For your information, many nations, to include Thailand, petition the US Navy to allow for port visits. The US navy has only a certain number of ships available for that in a given year, and they actually portion out the ship visits based on requests forwarded mostly by the State Department as well as the Department of Defense. Whether a sailor or Marine really wants to go to Bahrain, for example, does not have much bearing on the decision.

Strange story. How will the police be able to determine who is a gang member and who is not? Checking employment papers is ever weirder. They have a Thai ID card unless the government suddenly passed a law that Thai citizens need prior permission to travel and need to register with the authorities this is just small talk.

While we all know that Kathoeys can be quite literally a pain in the ass and that they behave often very unpleasant I do not see how the police could crack down this way without crossing the line. Let's hope for this overzealous officers that the ladyboys do not put them on candid camera, as the entire force in Phuket would panic again when they find themselves at Youtube....

The bottom line is that Thailand becomes a police state. only in police states you can arrest people and fine them BEFORE something has happened.

"only in police states you can arrest people and fine them BEFORE something has happened"

Where does it say 'in th OP' that they are going to arrest and or fine people BEFORE anything has happened :):D

This is a typical comment from a yank tugging on his own appendix. Most serviceman from around the world come from low income families and different cultural backgrounds. Your comment that American servicemen liberated Asia what a total load of crap and an insensitive comment. Have you forgotten that it was the 2nd WW and there were other countries and servicemen fighting it before the yanks joined in? Your comment shows total disrespect to the servicemen from Australia, England, New Zealand, Holland and Canada to mention just a few who died fighting in Asia. Check the war graves in Thailand and tell me how many graves of Aussies and Dutch you see then tell me how many yanks you see. It was the allied servicemen and women who won the 2nd WW and not America. Yes America played a part in a team and that is all. It is your holyer than God attitude and total disrespect to the rest of the world that turns the rest of the world against America.

Have you forgotten that Thailand was an allie of the Japanese so America certainly did not liberate Thailand. If America liberated Thailand well they aren't speaking Japanese but are now working in brothels and wearing womens clothing for the pleasure of American servicemen on R&R you call that liberation.

Raise your hand if you hate america too.

pick me... pick me...

I wouldn't go so far as to say I hate America - but there are definitely some issues with their foreign and domestic policies that I have a huge problem with - especially their "Were going to keep bombing you until you love us" diplomacy...

I have a real problem with the attitude of so many Americans to their military and their pride in it... when will they realise that for most of the world, entering the military is seen as the last resort of the lowest intelligence and socially inadequate... and your pride in being in the military should really be shame that you couldn't do something better...

but...

What a load of fallacy of argument... a ship is in point A of the worlds' oceans, and needs to return to point B... after a month on the boat, the crew deserves some down time, and it happens that the route takes them in the vicinity of a number of ports... many ports aren't suitable for shore leave, either because there is nothing to do off the boat, or not sufficient infrastructure to cater to 2500 additional men AND WOMEN...

They don't WANT to dump them in the middle of nowhere with a bottle of rum each to get drunk, they want them somewhere that they can have some fun and enjoy the opportunity to see the world... They don't select the ports based on the number or price of the whores...

So, I am pretty much an anti-fan of the military, and even I can not see how taking R&R leave in a port is an insult... American Ships take R&R in Sydney all the time, and I have never heard of anyone thinks it is an insult... a bit of a pain in the backside because every bar is full, and every eligible girl in town is hunting for a sailor not a local... but not an insult... If they wanted cheap and good whores, Sydney wouldn't be too high on the list...

Me thinks someone is annoyed that their favourite BG won't love them for a couple of nights, or that the rate goes up...

Cheers,

Daewoo

R & R is Rest & Recreation. What's the problem with that? It's a euphemism...or at least was. You can change it to CV or Courtesy Visit but it still amounts to the same thing. It is only a question of time before Courtesy Visit becomes a euphemism for drunken debauchery anyway because, at the end of the day, that's what it is.

If certain States were not so accommodating with provision for naval R & R, there would not be a problem.

A "Crackdown on Criminal Ladyboys", surely this is a play on words and not a serious thread!

It gets weirder and weirder...

Do the famous US navy/marines really need protection from Thai civilians?

Why only from ladyboys? Are Phuket Ladygirls totally safe?

Are ladyboys the criminals per se? Or are the police cracking down on known crims?

If so, why wait for US navy/marines to come to Phuket? For reinforcement?

This stupid tradition of fanfared 'crackdowns' is so much like the ilfamous 'campaigns'

in the Western politics. Never achives much, except admitting their own inaction and inability to get results.

I wonder if any part of Phuket policeforce is designated to protect tourists and/or residents from 3000 strong young sex starved men unleished at this small island?

Ooops, sorry... I am wrong. The amirican boys can't do anything wrong, can they? :)
