Hi I am planning a trip to Tachilek this week and was wondering what currency I should take with me as Thailand says something about taking more than 10000 baht out of the country?

Well on the border when you come back it says you may have to show 20,000 baht(for reason of having money to support yourself here) so in reality you can take out what you want..But if you are a big player taking a few million out and then trying to get it back in you might be suspected of being a drug lord!!!! lol

I would have thought that the big drug money went in the other direction David.

Seriously, I've never heard of, or seen, a Farang being searched by immigration going in either direction.

Most of the people in Tachilek, including Myanmar immigration have shown a great affection for US dollars in my experience so I can't see the casinos being any different.

I guess it will have to be Thai Baht then seeing not one bank I went to yesterday had any USD.

Ironic you can only take 10k out but have to show 20k when you arrive.

You can open a USD account with most banks here but they have no money to give you back?

The casinos are all in Thai Baht but the reviews I read else where were all wrong. I went to the Allure casino they only have Roulette and Baccarat and some slot machines no Blackjack or Craps etc they told me the Regina casino has Blackjack so I went there to find it was exactly the same alot cleaner but again only Baccarat or Roulette Regina would be my choice next time, has a nice golf course too. I thought you had to come back the same day but the Myanmar side gave me a 14 day travel pass for 500 Baht took about 2 minutes for them to issue needed no photographs on the whole I give Tachilek 5 stars for easiness and no real hassle I will never do the Vientienne run again.

They don't check for, or ask to see cash at the border - haven't for many moons.

As for casinos, there's the better known one next to the Mekong Hotel. It used to be on the 7th floor, but they recently built a designated building for it. I went in there once, checked out the food, was disappointed. Maybe you'll have better luck.

There's a lesser known casino in the basement of the large fancy building up on the hill north of town, which is the golf club. The casino may be incognito, as there aren't any signs. I showed up early one morning. At first they didn't want to let me in (I was dressed v. casual and riding a one-speed bicycle). I don't gamble and was just looking for a breakfast place, as I'd eaten on the main floor (fancy place, low prices). They said the main floor was not serving food, and then some hostess came out and said I could come downstairs. They had me walk thru a metal detector.

I didn't expect to see a small casino with about 7 tables and about 3 dozen glum-faced gamblers ....at 8 a.m. No natural light. I asked a hostess if any farang came there to play, and she indicated 'no.' I had a grilled cheese and fries, and as I was paying, the workers set out a buffet, so my timing was off, not for the first time.

It was a relief to get out in the natural light after that.

I was fairly dissapointed that nowhere had blackjack? I went ti Allure they told me Regina had blackjack but once i got there they did not have it anymmore and they told me to go to Allure. Lots of people losing money playing Baccarat which is the game that all Thais lose money playing.
