Todays print edition of Bangkok Post has an advertisment for a Seized Car Auction.

Wednesday 25 November from 10AM in the parking zone in front of the Seized Goods Division Bulding, Customs Department, Klongtoey. Viewing of vehicles 23rd and 24th.

More details www.customs.go.th and www.athit-auction.com (pictures of the vehicles on the athit site).

So, has anyone actually been to one of these auctions? If so did you buy anything?

Logic (I know, I know) would dictate that buying one of these cars would also net the necessary documentation to actually get it on the road but we are in Thailand.

A general guide for buying at auction is this: "Not every car for sale at auction is bad, but every bad car will be there."

The cars that go through the hands of customs (or police) auction have been rejected by the powers that be, they have first choice, next in the peaking order is the trade connections that get private invites for the better or select cars, what's left gets punted out to the public at these auction. If your bid is accepted (a friend tried once and was told he could not buy anything despite having the cash for the car he wanted with him on the spot) the paperwork is likely to take a long time and be expensive.

Still it's a nice day out - have fun. :)

Can get a car who noone want. Forget about Japs or Mercs! Someone else will get them. I bit on a Chevrolet Camaro there and got it, 14 years ago and it was a nightmare until the car was on the road. The camaro was in bad shape and noone want buy a lefthand drive car in that time. I got it for 325'000 baht. You bit in a envalope (not wth the hand), so noone knows how mutch other peaple offered.

Yes, payment have to be made on spot, but paperwork comes from the custom, they was inclouded, car i received next day. With the customs paperwork and the car you go to ministery of transportation in Mo Chit. Registering the Camaro i payd 10'000 Baht and a little bit Tea money, so it isn't expensive, but timewaisting, takes more than a month to get plates and bluebook. For registering the car i recoment to use a agent, cost a couple thousend but takes away all the hassles. I can recomend a agent in BKK if needed.
