Uniquely Thai Habits / Customs

Maybe not uniquely Thai, but it wouldn't happen back in old Europe. Forgot my ATM card in the ATM today(not the first time...). After one hour I realized that I forgotten the card. Took a taxi back. When I got there a girl approached me asked if I'd lost something. Turns out she found the card in the machine, and took it and waited for the owner to come back. That means that she waited for two hours. She didn't want any reward money but she asked if we could go to a movie together. :)

Maybe she saw the balance on your account? :D Just kidding, that's a great story. I hope you did take her to the movies.

Proudly declaring to all that they have never been colonised, whilst omitting that every bordering country has sacked Thailand at least once each. And they have only 'never been colonised' because they gave away vast chunks of land in a peace deal.

When did any of the Lao kingdoms or Malay Sultanates sack Thailand?!?

A plastic hose at least 50 years past it's useful life (cracked, brittle) loosely attached to the spigot with a piece of black rubber tied around it, rewrapped almost daily in an attempt to lessen the everpresent leakage. I bought some new hose for 60 baht and they were shocked. What a waste of money? And the screw clamp? Truly direct from the American Space Program. Of course, I had to go back to buy a screw driver. Nobody had one. But 100 baht every day for beer and a phone card, no problem!

Yes C clamps are unique phenom here. Finally tracked them down a Home Pro. As for hoses, like anything plastic here, need to keep them out of the sun.

Visitors taking a nap - as if it was their own home

whats wrong with taking a nap? maybe westerners are just colder when it comes to entertaining others.

here we offer visitors a guest room or even our own bedrooom if there is no other room, or a child's room, to take a nap if someone is tired. middle eastern courtesy.

Expecting you to pay for everything from a plate of rice to a house.

Losing all self control on a scale not seen since the Russians entered Berlin.

Stop hanging out with trashy people. Problem solved.

Carrying the baby balanced on the front of the motorcycle.

*Agreed. It's dangerous behavior but read more about Buddhist religion and its impact on culture to figure out why this sort of thing doesn't phase most thais.

Hawking goods of all manner in all manner of respectable businesses and the owners can't do a thing about it.

*Perfectly acceptable in my eyes. Western societies should lighten up and let the poor working class have a bit of free will.

Being unable to criticise any one.

*Strange. The Thais i've met criticize themselves more than anything else. Could it be the company you keep..oh wait..yes that's it.

All students are 'c' grade and above, with failure being unheard of.

*Face and hammering students on grades is a relatively meaningless gesture when there are strict standardized tests to determine who gets into the top universities.

Being ignorant on a par with pre-historic mankind.

*Not as ignorant as you think.

Never reading a book.

*Not from my experiences.

Having a road accident and just standing there uncomplaining without pointy fingers.

*Mostly because it's because they are waiting for people who know what to do to show up.

Having so many transexuals.

Being tolerant of so many transexuals.

*Nothing wrong with this.

Referring to all foreigners as 'falang' having never sort a more acceptable or Thai expression.

*Farang is a pretty neutral term. Much more neutral than what most of the minorities in western countries are called by white Americans, Brits, etc..

When viewing nature's wonders responding with 'mai alloy'.

*I think you don't understand what this means. :)

wintermute, interesting that you decided to answer each thing this person brought up. Were you unsure of the title of the thread? It's Uniquely Thai Habits / Customs. Not reasons why they have them. I found the whole thread humorous, and did most people I suspect. I found most to be truthful. Some were things that I barely notice. All are overlooked as just part of living here. It sounds like you should start a new thread called, "Why Thais do the things they do" That aside, here is one ot mentioned yet.

Human signs, or human sign posts. I always wonder what people who's job it is to hold a sign in front of a business 10 hours a day, tells others what they do for a living.

  • 1 month later...

Pushing everyone out of the way just to get on a bus

Stopping in front of you in a busy area with no consideration for anyone but themselves

Driving exactly how they mount buses - except without the fake smiles

Pretending to be super polite when in fact these smiley peeps are raging inside with motives not even a trained psychologist of the west we will ever understand...

and of course, making pornography illegal but legalizing the sex trade to maximize on cash and minimize on masturbation!

yippee for that one!

Whenever I bought perfume or shoes for my gf, she gave me 10 or 20 baht in return saying it's for buying it from me. She went on to say that perfumes, shoes and handkerchieves are not supposed to be made as gifts to your teerak coz these things don't last long hence it could reflect on the relationship. She said this is an old Thai custom/culture. My ex-gfs also told me the same thing. I think this is unique to Thailand.
