Since moving to Thailand nearly 3 years ago, I have been on ToT ADSL - the only hard wire service available where I live.

My first contract was for 1Mbps @1000baht per month.

A year or so later, I was offered a free upgrade ie 2Mbps @ 1000 baht per month.

Early this year, ToT had a promotion, upgrading to 4Mbps, still at 1000 baht per month, and more recently, within the past couple of weeks, they have dropped the price to 790 baht per month.

My download speeds (using Speed Test or a similar program) typically show up to 2 - 3 Mbps within Thailand, and somewhat less outside Thailand. I understand that you don't necessarily get the full speed you are paying for.

However, when I look at the Device Info page of my router (TP-Link TD-W8910G), it shows "Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps): 3072", which leads me to believe that what ToT are currently providing is a maximum rate of 3 Gbps, rather than the 4Gbps I am paying for.

So my question is - if I am achieving a download speed of (say) 2 Mbps under the 4Gb plan, would I only get 75% of that, 1.5 Mbps under the 3 Mb plan ie is the actual download speed proportional to the maximum speed you are paying for?

Firstly, all home packages are contractually "up to X Mbps" as they are a shared medium and never can guarantee full line speed.

However, if your contract states you have an "up to 4 Mbps" package, then your router should connect at 4 Mbps. Maybe check your monthly invoice and see if it states the speed you should get. A call to the help center might resolve this, it very well might be an oversight by a technician.

Technically, the maximum practical speed you can get is just under 90% of rated speed. Nothing to do with your provider, just a technical fact of ADSL, and the overhead it incurs during data transmission.

Which is why at most speed tests it is stated that if you get 85% of rated speed, you are considered to have a good connection.

Son on your 4Mbps link you should see around 3.5 Mbps, when testing within Thailand.

Some times you get more this is a test on True 8Mb service to San Francisco from Pattaya

If your router negotiates a 8Mbps downstream link and you get this result....rigged speedtest!

True subscribers to the 8Mbps package are getting 14Mbps downlink for the first month, presumably so they can try and sell the more expensive 14 Mbps when it becomes available a little late on :)

Additionally, In Pattaya at least, there are reports of True fiddling with the connections. Speedtests and small downloads come in fast, close to the 14 Mbps negotiated router speed: 1,4 MBps, but look for 3 minutes and from one moment to the next it'll drop to a steady 1 Mbps (100 kBps)...

ToT "upgraded" me to the speed I was paying for, and now achieving download speeds of 3.6+ Mbps (within Thailand) :)

Thanks Monty.

i am also looking in to getting hi-speed internet service with either TOT or True. i live about 40 minutes outside of Nakhon Ratchasima in a small town called Nonsung. I was reading these posts and wondering how you communicate with the companies. do they have employees that speak english?

i have also been trying to read articles on getting internet, but i either find pages that cant be translated from thai, or the other pages tell me conflicting information. i have questions about the kinds of connections that are available (wired, satellite, wireless), the speed i can get, and the packages available.

if anyone knows where i can find some answers or can help me i would really appreciate it!

thanks!

jay you have a few options re ToT.

You may want to call their Call Centre on 1100 - they have an english option by pressing 9.

When I want to speak to them locally, I need to call Udon Thani, and there are generally (technical) people there who can speak english.

I am sure they would have english speakers in the sales department in Korat.

Finally, you could look at their english website http://www.tot.co.th/toten/index.php
