Report Thailand–Cambodia Tensions May Shutter Key Checkpoints, Slash Trade by 60%
Picture courtesy of Naewna A potential closure of five vital border checkpoints between Thailand and Cambodia could result in monumental financial losses. The Customs Department estimates that closing these gates could impact trade worth a staggering 174.53 billion baht, according to reports from TV Channel 7 and Daily News. Chief among the trade crossings at risk is the Aranyaprathet checkpoint in Sa Kaeo province, which handled over 110 billion baht of commerce with Cambodia last year. The other checkpoints, Khlong Yai in Trat province, Ban Laem in Chanthaburi province, Chong Chom in Surin province, and Chong Sangam in Si Sa Ket province, collectively accounted for tens of billions more. Crucially, the closure of Aranyaprathet alone would slash over 60% of the total trade value between the two nations. This potential disruption threatens to reroute goods, starve industries of raw materials, and diminish investor confidence. The backdrop to this economic risk is a legal tussle at the international level. The government of Cambodia has lodged a letter with the International Court of Justice over three contentious temples and the Mombei area, as noted by the Phnom Penh Post. The letter concerning the border dispute was sent by Cambodia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prak Sokhonn, aiming to address issues regarding the Mombei area and the temples Ta Muen Thom, Ta Moan Tauch, and Ta Khwai. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet asserts that Cambodia is committed to resolving the border issues legally through the Court of Justice, as underscored in a recent social media statement. The situation remains tense as both nations seem poised for a legal showdown over these historic and strategically significant sites. Meanwhile, the potential economic repercussions from border trade interruptions loom large, highlighting the intricate balance between historical disputes and modern commerce. Canadian PM 'shuts off' Trump as press conference heads 'off the rails': CNN
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney interrupted a question and answer session with Donald Trump at Monday's G7 summit before the U.S. president got too much into the weeds discussing ICE raids on "blue cities," according to CNN correspondent Kristen Holmes. As Trump began to rehash his usual talking points, claiming former President Joe Biden allowed "murderers, killers, people from gangs, people from jails," into the United States, the Canadian leader — and host of the meeting which is being held in Alberta — stepped in. "If you don't mind, just — I'm going to exercise my role, if you will, as G7 chair, since we have a few more minutes with the president and his team, and then we actually have to start the meeting to address some of these big issues," Carney said. . Report Cambodian Workers Flee Sisaket, Thailand Amid Border War Fears
Pictures courtesy of Amarin TV A sudden departure of 50 Cambodian workers from their jobs in Sisaket, Thailand, unfolded today as fears of an impending border conflict prompted their return home. Arriving at the Chong Sangam checkpoint, the group carried numerous possessions, including refrigerators, signalling a significant exodus spurred by safety concerns. Chong Sangam checkpoint, allowing passage from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Thai side and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Cambodian side, was the scene of this unexpected movement. The workers, many of whom had spent up to ten years in Thailand, departed in six vehicles laden with personal effects. They earned between 420 and 450 baht per day, plus overtime, yet opted to abandon their steady jobs due to heightened insecurity along the Cambodia-Thailand border. Interviews revealed that the workers returned following a call from their families, reacting to warnings from the Cambodian government about potential war threats over disputed border territories. Mr Chai Ratliang, a long-term migrant in Sisaket, expressed that their departure followed urgent requests from family members amid fears of the area becoming a conflict zone as tensions rose over three contested temples and the neighbouring Mombei region. To facilitate their return, the departing Cambodians pooled resources to rent transport for the journey. Despite having stable employment in Thailand, the immediate safety concerns took precedence, leading to this large-scale movement. While they harbour hopes of returning should conditions stabilise, the reality of uncertain employment in Cambodia looms large. Alternatively, they consider seeking opportunities in other countries. In summary, the exodus underscores the fragility of migrant labour amidst geopolitical tensions. The workers' stories reflect the complex interplay between employment stability and personal safety, with future moves contingent on the evolving political landscape in the region.
