Are Some Bar Owners Plain Stupid ?

i like a daytime beer downtown (Soi Buokow, 2nd rd etc) but why would you pay for 65-75 baht for a bottle of beer if you can get it for 45 baht in the next bar ...... I wouldn't exactly call myself tight but if a bar doesn't have a happy hour during the day I just don't bother.....

You don't have to have a business degree to see that bars with cheap beer do a pretty good day trade yet neighbouring bars stick to night time prices with zero customers.... New PLaza opposite Soi 8 on 2nd road is a classic example .... cheap beer = lots of customers

yes, Eagle bar is always busy... i used to go to the one on the cross-roads.. "Worldwide Bar" I think.... for some reason I haven't been down that way for a while.....

My new thing is taking the dogs for a walk which consists of leaving them run around in some empty land nearby whilst I sit in the back of the truck drinking beer with a good book ...

The Cheap Charlie bars in Pattaya are merely an extension of the scruffy, washed up old drunks that drink in the likes of Witherspoon's in the UK.

Roll your own tobacco, a beer to last you an hour and the horse racing page open of a daily tabloid is the order of the day.

If you are an alcoholic drunk and drink all day every day then I could see why one would look for the Cheap Charlie doss bars. Then again, if one ventures out once or twice a week for a tipple or two like any other civilised person in the world then who cares what a beer costs?

Even the Thai girls pay 120 in some places in Walking Street, that says it all.

BTW, ever been to Singapore? At 15-20 Singapore dollars a bottle, it makes the 65 baht a bottle beer bars, seem like a steal.

The answer to the OP is Yes. Many owners are stupid, mostly the ones you are talking about. For 35/40 baht a bottle they can kiss their investment goodbye. Even 65 is ridiculously low.

It doesn't take an economics degree to see that a beer bar that sells beer at a price where it makes very little profit is either propped up by the owner's own money or it will go bankrupt. Any idiot can have a busy bar if they underprice themselves. The majority of bars here in Thailand are run by people with no experience who shouldn't really be doing it. It is no news that most bars make no profit at all and they close when the owners cash runs out.

I've seen one Thai bar selling beer at the same price as they bought it, the owners said it was great, they were very busy. They closed after a month and the beer wholesaler told me they had not paid their bills. Surprise.

Enjoy the cheap beer while it lasts (if you can call the rat's piss they sell here beer).

Stupid? No, letting the girls Thai boyfriends and children hang out in and in front of the bar, and blaring Thai soap operas really do make farangs feel like drinking there.

Yes the bar owners are stupid for giving away their business to you CHEAP CHARLIE'S and BALLOON CHASERS. Their losing their investment to satisfy you. What a bunch of dumb ass's.

I once heard a story about the guy selling apples and his business being slow.So he thought out a ingenious business plan.He started to selling his apples, which he bought at 25 eurocents a piece, for 24 eurocents. However he made a loss of 1 eurocent on each apple, due to the massive amount he sold every day he still had a profit at the end of te month.

Though I'm not sure about the accuracy of the story

It is true that any contribution to costs is appreciated but it has to be extra income and not substitution. Sure, you pay rent for 24 hours a day but you don't pay staff and other variable costs. You have to cover those to make it viable and I guess it depends upon what else you sell. If you have barfines, pool, food etc. then you can lower your beer prices but if you are just beer, then you don't have the same leeway.

That said, you can usually do something, unless all you would do is start a price war where no-one wins.

Here's an idea:

Find a bar where the owner is reasonable. Tell him/her you and your TV friends are looking for a place where they can go to feel relaxed, comfortable & well-treated. Soooooo, what your group is looking for is a place that will welcome you with open arms, every time you walk in. And, when you do walk in with your group of (let's say 6 or more) pals.... all drinks will be priced, well maybe, 50 baht for a bottle of beer and 60 baht for a cocktail... whadaya think? Maybe they'll agree (not all are stupid)!

Then, tell all of us here about your great arrangement and let's see how many fellow TV'ers follow you down to the place for fun. Who knows? It might be so successful an idea that more funtown bars want the TV group to give them a try... Hey! It could happen!

You mean something in the range of double standard pricing? One price for you and another price for another class of customers.

i can rememeber before (probably not now) I could buy a case of San Miquel which worked out about 27 baht in those wholesale shops which are scattered everywhere..... so then a bar sells it for 45 baht.. thats an uplift of approx 60% which is pretty good considering how easy the product is to handle as it doesn't go off like, say, fruit and veg where you have to allow for waste...

Anyway I'm talking about "bars" that consist of 4 counters, a fridge and a couple of fans.... so if someone can't see the common sense of paying less for a beer in a bar in the same vincinity thats up to them....

Why do you thank there is such a high turn over of bars. The owner is living in a pipe dream, the over head is to high and the profit margin is thin and at the end of the day there is no profit. So for you bar seat experts that only set, drink and BS and expect a bar owner who is dumb enough to put up with your brilliance; he deserves to lose his ass by keeping you Cheep Charlie's and Balloon Chaser in his/her Establishment. :)

An "uplift" of 60% is good is it ? and on what knowledge base do you make that assumption ? I'll hazard a guess and say it is just plucked out of the air. I'm not saying that the retail price could not be Bt45 in certain circumstances but you could not survive on that mark up in certain business locations and within their active trading hours.

For many places, the costs are so high that prices are driven high as well.

I concur about the logic of certain deluded cheap Charlies! thumbsup.gif

But looking at it another way, surely he would go bust quicker having an empty bar charging 65 Baht a beer and having no custoners than having a fulll bar charging 50 Baht a beer with the same costs?

Edit:I may have asnwered a wong post above but to answer this directly it''s a matter of supply and demand, there's a much greater supply of bars than demand.

FYI there is a general rule of thumb for running bars and / or restaurants. Food must make approximately 200% profit. Drinks 300%. Anyone who breaks this rule will go under. Period.

Michaelaways idea would bankrupt the place very quickly.

William Osborne has obviously never run a business at all.

Pattaya parent - the first scenario means that one member of staff would be needed. The second would require you to work yours and your staff's balls off, and have no money at the end of the month to pay the salaries.

Tell that to Joseph Heller.

Oh great, an idea of daytime bars dropping there prices so theres more cheap charlie, piss head, scruffy losers on the streets during the day...

In Bangkok, everyone does it. Nowadays happy hour is almost all day and most of the evening. Add to that the proud bar owners giving away food and drinks to all of their new, suddenly acquired "buddies" and you can see why most bars have such a rapid turnover.

Supply and demand, Why pay more when there is no need , Why not drink as cheap Charlie's , and give the different to some good cause . like Pattaya orphanage, but then again your money , same as my money

Perhaps they're not looking to attract a Farang market.....
