BANGKOK: -- Wearing tops with thin straps can be seriously bad for your health, according to the Ministry of Public Health. In an extraordinary directive published yesterday, a ministry spokeswoman warned young women who favour ‘spaghetti strap’ tops, particularly those made from dark-coloured fabrics, that they were putting themselves at risk of being bitten by mosquitoes, which were the carriers of diseases ranging from elephantiasis to dengue fever and malaria. The ministry spokeswoman warned women who showed their shoulders, backs or belly buttons that they could become the victims of such conditions unless they modified their sartorial habits. She advocated, instead, wearing clothing which covered the skin, and which was in the pale shades that are less attractive to mosquitoes. At the same time, she noted that mosquitoes liked to rest on outside clothes lines and in baskets fall of dirty laundry. Although it is often thought that the mosquitoes responsible for the sometimes fatal dengue fever are unable to withstand the dry season, the ministry spokeswoman exploded this belief as a myth, and said that instead the eggs could survive for several months in drought conditions, hatching as soon as the rains came. --TNA 2005-04-11 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Usually, the story gets trotted out every year prior to Songkran that the powers-that-be do not want such flimsy dress to take away from the sanctity of the Songkran celebration. All revelers should refrain from such skimpy clothes and deck themselves out in more traditional Thai garb so as to preserve the solemnness of the occasion... Just realise that there are some smart people who work for the Thai government who aren't rabid prudes. What these people do is set up either powerless ministry's or departments where they stick all these prudes (or 'old heads' in Thai). For most of the year they get to work on useless memo's to each other and get a civil serivce ranking and pension for them which gives them the 'status' that they so desire. Then every year, just before Songkran, they let them out of the asylum to put out their one spaggetti strap related media release for the year. Everyone from their PM down nods their head seriously to humour them. Then they are led back into the asylum, and the key is put away until next year when they are let out once more. Do shoulders sweat more than feet perhaps? Never heard of someone having smell shoulder before. Is it ok for them to wear their shoulderless t-shirts if they deet their shoulders? Maybe they should order all water thrown over the next couple of weeks around the country to contain 20% DDT powder instead of Jasmine talc! Mosquitoes can bite through clothing so what does it matter if you are wearing sleeves or not? So, if you wear a long sleeve and shorts w/ no shoes are they saying you are safe from mosquitoes? hahahah What will they think of next..... I think the report from a time before saying they simply refused girls wearing spaghetti straps was a little more reasonable. When it is read that way it is honorable, it is showing they are standing for some belief, when it is read as they put it this year it is a bit rediculous! Mossies attack the feet for three simple reasons. First, feet are far from the hands which wack, this survival skill in deep in the genetic code of the mossies who survive. Two, feet are closer to the damp earth and wet grass where the mossies are sitting waiting for a nice ankle to come by. And three, the ankle tends to have blood vessels very close to the surface of the skin. I am sure these reports however are completely true. Why ask any doctor who gets these diseases and it is likely 99% girls with spaghetti straps! roflmao Now eating Brewers yeast does make you less tasty. What has caused them to act with such stupidity when procreation is good for all. Also remember that Thailand's economy is heavily based upon tourism which is heavily based upon sex. This is in order to quell any feelings of lust which can be bought on by the sight of female flesh as lust is not good for the Thai nation. This should come as no surprise at all, consider that our beloved CEO have a Ph D. degree. One official was quoted as saying he kind of liked the idea of Public Beheadings and would put the idea up for vote next session. I used to see this kind of thing all the time when I lived in Jakarta, except that the warning was that they should expect to be victims of rape.
