Pattaya, November 23 [PATTAYA ONE NEWS] : On Saturday Afternoon there was a major medical emergency on Larn Island, located 4kms off the coast of Pattaya, after a Baht Bus had suffered a break failure and 10 passengers along with the driver had suffered injuries. The passengers were all Lions International members who were here in Pattaya for the OSEAL Conference at the Royal Cliff Beach Resort Peach Convention Center. The injured were received at the Bali Hai Port after being transported to the mainland for emergency treatment. Initially the Baht Bus Driver had ran away from the scene but was soon located and also taken to Hospital. Khun Nara aged 32 explained that he had picked up the Lions Members at Samaer Beach who wanted to go to nearby Tawean Beach. During the journey, the breaks failed on the Baht Bus Number 29 and the driver was apparently forced to collide with a tree to bring the vehicle to a halt. Two of the passengers were seriously injured and they were all taken to the Pattaya Memorial Hospital where 5 of the injured party were kept in for further treatment. Police arrested the driver and he is now assisting Police with their enquiries.

One question I would like to know, was he insured?

Having just returned from Pattaya I noticed that the BBus situation is getting worse, particularly at the the junction of South Rd/Second Rd with buses waiting to go to Jomtien, I noticed this Guy there most of the time, he was cramming people on insisting 6 people on each bench, children on parents laps, 2 in the cab with the driver and 3-4 hanging off the back.

Before the buses were full many just got off and got on the bus in front or got on a passing bus, passing buses normally wont pick up in sight of the "Bus Stop" but now many are so I assume the Mafia is loosing it's grip.

On thing for sure is Pattaya needs a transport regulatory system with gut's to stand up to the Baht Bus Mafia.

why did he run away if it was break faliure? ........

good question - why?

Apparently there is a common belief among bus drivers that if they can remain at large for 30 days, then the police cannot charge them for dangerous driving, negligence etc. Therefore they nearly always run away.

I have no idea if this is the law at present.
