simple question really, just want to know how everyones goes about relieving the boredom when in LOS, I will be returning to LOS to live for a year in january, i have stayed for 6 months twice already and i ended up just sleeping most of the day and then drinking all night, as much fun as that was, i don't intend to be doing that lifestyle quite as much this time, but can't think of much to get up to during the daytime, it won't be like i've got a job to get to, so i'm planning to bring a shit load of dvds, books to entertain myself.

just wandering what you guys get upto to pass the time of time?

cheers

if not around doing whatever you fancy, than get on the net - you can do work, listen to the music, watch movies, read books or search for info. Failing that - there are charities you can work for, lear something at schools or on the courses

BOREDOM???? Huh?

How can anyone get bored in Thailand? Of course, not everyone has various hobbies like I do: art work (painting and drawing), fly tying, fishing, photography, magazine and book writing, illustrating etc. Then of course there is travel and hiking. I'm not even going to get into the lovely ladies thing that could be all consuming for a single man like myself if I let it. My problem is finding enough time in the day to do everything. I'm trying to have myself cloned so I can do even more at the same time.

As a married man with a 16 year old son and a house ,garden ,car and computer ,what time have i got to be bored? books ,tv ,driving ,going to the market ,garden to look after ,wife and kid to look after ,i wish that there were more hours in the day ,if you are bored here you would be bored anywhere in the world.

After saying that its often the single guys that get bored ,once the novelty of rogering young women and drinking all day wear off.

I think most of the problem is not caused by boredom, but rather that Thailand doesn’t meet up to expectations because of financial reasons.

Many middle aged and elderly retirees come here believing it`s going to be a new start in life, in a hope of rekindling their younger days, wining, dining and some regular hot totty, either in the town or on a more permanent basis as a steady girlfriend or partner.

But soon after settling in Thailand they learn that this country is not the bargain basement it used to be and that socialising, having that dream girlfriend and all the trimmings is for many financially out of reach. Thailand is still the adult playground it is renowned to be, but of course for a price which increases year by year and having to budget their income more and more due to the appalling bank exchange and interest rates.

Many of us end up staying indoors pottering around the house or becoming computer junkies only having enough income for the occasional night out and run the real risk of becoming trapped in a void.

So for those thinking about living in Thailand for the long term or the rest of they’re lives should consider first if they can afford the sort of dream lifestyle that is portrayed about Thailand in the media and tourist information guidebooks.

Books? Depends on where you live. You can get a load of excellent good priced used books in Pattaya, also Bangkok and Chiang Mai but higher priced. DVDs? You don't need to bring any, wink wink nod nod.

Shock of shocks, I agree with your post.

I knew that my first few months here would be a bit tight, so I bought a game console (xbox 360) with me. It can play DVDs, get online and play games. Have 2 controllers and have taught my other half how to play the games with me.

We are in Khon Kaen so the options for cheap activities are less than in Bangkok but sometimes a simple wander around the market or a trip to grans house up country keeps us amused.

Can't wait to get some transport and have regular income again.

Why bother coming to Thailand you can sleep all day and drink all night in most countries, [unless you are working in Saudi or somewhere]

Why not travel around and see some more of the country. How about taking a language course?

I'm with the other posters who don't have enough hours in the day :)

Where are you in Thailand? As much as I hate the air and traffic in Bangkok, it's never really possible to be bored here unless you want to be. I assume the same for all the other larger cities here. If you are in a larger city, join an expat group, exercise at a gym, check out the libraries (I finally found some!), do anything that gets you out and meeting people.

If you are really out in the sticks, you've got to be more self-oriented. Check out your local Wat and try meditation, go fishing (as was mentioned) or develop an interest in gardening, building, or mechanics. Get a bike and start exploring the area, look on google satellite maps, and plan out a route to something that looks interesting. I can't wait till I can get out of Bangkok, and just be bored if I want to. An air-conditioned garage, some tools and my motorcycle are all I would need to keep me busy for a long time.

Enjoy your time!

That is pretty much spot on, but the trouble is.......what's the alternative? You burn your bridges and settle here then the goalposts move. While Thailand may be getting more expensive it still remains far cheaper than than most people's home country. Once you have made that move you really are pretty much stuck with it as it becomes far too expensive to return home. At the end of the day, even though life doesn't pan out exactly as we would wish , the quality of living that you can enjoy here is far better than you would experience back home on the same budget.
