Sorry to hear about Sam. Do you have any details as to what caused the accident?

Is it just me, or have there been more road deaths than usual among expats the past few months?

Hello - crashed head on with another scooter i guess..... I was hoping to get some info on this from the forum. I don't know what happended to the other driver or someone who witness this crash.. Sam had no money nor his family in the states and is going to have a huge hospital bill as they performed at least two surgeries on him b-4 his heart failed....not sure how this will play out...any thought that i might be able to pass on to his people here would be appreciated - kcore

there seem to have been a spate of motor bike related fatalities recently, enough to make one go out and buy a car for some protection. It's very sad but for some reason so many people seem to drive around like maniacs. To all those who have died RIP.

A day doesn't go by where I don't see some foreigner speeding by on a bike and think that they are pushing their luck.

As for the road between Lamai & Chaweng, I rode down on the back of a bike there once...ONCE. It was early evening and on the way back the lights on the hilly section weren't on. I swore never to do that again.

Totally agree...i drove my bike one night from Chaweng to Lamai and vowed never again, it was quite scary!

I saw a crash happen yesterday afternoon on the main Chaweng beach road. 2 young Aussie guys driving big powerful bikes way too fast. One lost control crashed into the orange barrier thingy outside Flintstones bar which then moved into the bikes all parked and caused a domino effect on them all as they toppled over. The guy was very lucky, got taken to hospital with scratches/cuts/bruises but that was all. They came back later and once they eventually figured out how to even start their bikes the guy who had crashed earlier almost went flying right across the street out of control into the hight pavement!! They looked like an accident waiting to happen and wouldn't surprise me if they crashed again!!...The mad thing is that they both HAD crash helmets on the back of the bikes yet even after crashing still didn't wear them...crazy!!

I agree. The road from Chawend to Lamai is a extremely dangerous and I try never to drive on that part of the ring road at night.

I have been at Ohm Cycles and seen young male tourists come in to his shop and dare each other to rent the biggest bike they can afford. Bikes they could never have at home due to the cost of purchase or insurance. Ohm is very good, though. I've seen him refuse to rent bike bikes out to obviosly inexperienced riders. If he's not sure, he'll ask them to drive the bike up and down the road outside his shop to see if they are capable. He always provides a crash helmet too. But once these riders get a few beers inside them, caution seems to go out of the window! :)

Yeah, i've also heard that Ohm Cycles are quite good and you've hit the nail right on the head.....Alcohol!! They are ok to start with then after a few beers get brave and start trying to be smart and showing off then it all ends in tears in one way or another unforunately....

RIP Sam..

There was also a Guy who died about 6 weeks ago that i knew first hand on a Bike coming back from Lamai towards Chaweng, it wasn't mentioned on the Forum..

That too was approx 03:30 in the morning & sadly, that seems to be the time that these accidents are happening.

Alcohol..... the time of the day... 03:30 am .... not a good mix!

then add the road conditions, the non existing safety installations...

...but then everyone is responsible for his actions!

sorry, that it hit yet another one...!

RIP

I did'nt hear the world alcohol mentioned until you just said. Is this true or is it an assumption?

My respects to Sam, and to his loved ones at this difficult time.

My respect also to kcore, who came onto this forum looking for help and information, and, it would seem, got little in return.

Yes, shame on all of us for not having any information about the accident.

With respect, it might be quite difficult for anybody here to offer any relevant help or information as few/none of us witnessed this sad event.

My condolences to his family and friends..

Given the state of mind of some drivers, the state of the roads, lack of protection, policing and awareness I can only wonder..... Whos next?

I really do feel for the families overseas who have to learn, second hand, of accidents like this.

Sam.... God Bless.

Yes - big c u are 100% right. An upadate to sams accident turned out he was NOT between Lamai and Chengwau but, was heading south from lamia and the accident took place on a stretch of ring road that had just been re paved. Not sure where as I have only been to Lamai once but i think this puts it somewhere around the driving range or shooting range.

I know we are going away from the original post but...

You are right on 'Big C'! You only have to go to Phuket to see this in action. Because of the excellent roads the drivers go at ridiculously fast speeds. And most of them are really not very good, no mental capability to foresee any situation developing.

Thanks to all who posted your thoughts and condolences to Sam and his family....although I don't believe his family is worthy of these kind words. As the wake of this truly sad event continues, it turns out the family either has no money or no interest in doing the right thing for THIER family member here in Thailand, leaving the financail burden of his hospital bill - scooter - cremation - an other incidentals related to his death to the State, his aquaintances and friends. If anyone would like to help with this truly unfortunate situations please see Daw and Steve at the Bikini Bar in Samui. Lamai Beach. Once again, thanks again for those who chimmed in.....kcore
