Thailand educates public on HIV to mark World AIDS Day

BANGKOK: -- A number of Thai provinces held many activities on Tuesday to mark World AIDS Day December 1 to raise awareness among members of the regarding risks of HIV infections, particularly unsafe sex.

In Si Sa Ket, local authorities and the private sector as well as students held activities in a walking street and a train station to educate the public on reducing new infections, and discrimination against HIV patients.

Buriram Rajabhat University held a concert, plays, and a seminar on AIDS and its impact on society. Since 1990, the province has recorded 6,976 HIV cases.

In Uttaradit, more than 1,000 students and volunteers visited villagers by bicycle to educate them about HIV, with a campaign to run throughout December.

Meanwhile, Thailand’s National Health Security Office will adjust the anti-viral drug formula for HIV patients after new World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines advise all countries to develop a plan to phase out the use of earlier medications due to high frequencies of toxicities such as fat loss.

About 120,000 HIV patients are currently receiving anti-viral drugs from the office and the number is expected to rise to 138,000 in 2010 and 150,000 in 2011.
