Electric Meter

Featured Replies

I want to install an electric meter on a guest room which I am renting out. The tenant will pay for his electricity. I just want to be able to read his Kwh consumption. Can I buy a simple meter and fix it myself? If so, where can I buy a meter? I don't want to go through all the red tape by asking the electrical department to do it.

Hi,

You can buy a meter at HomePro or any other retail electrical outlet. If you are qualified, you can install it yourself or find a freelance electrician and have them do it for you. The shop which sells you the meter may be able to recommend. Labour is cheap.

It would also be a good idea to fit a breaker switch at the same time as installing the meter.

The meter that you buy will have a max Amperage rating and to be safe, the breaker should be slightly lower rated to safegaurd the meter in case of a power surge.

If you do intend to use a local electrician choose wisely as many are self taught and have limited knowledge when it comes to safety.

You will also need to know which meter to put in, depending upon what electricity is being used and the cabling you have. I think a bog standard meter installed from the electric company cost us Bt1500/2000 or so and the higher power one was more at about Bt3500.
