Honda In-built Or Standalone

Featured Replies

Anyone used the in-built Honda satnav around BKK. I cannot decide whether to go for the factory installed or just buy a third party unit. Cost is not really a restriction.

Who's GPS firmware and map does Honda use?

Good question I have no idea. It is just the factory installed in dash system.

Garmin GPS/SatNav with ESRI Thailand Street Map (TSM v10). Get a portable friction mount accessory so you can just plop it on the dash, no need to mess around with a suction cup. Can't go wrong! You can get a Nuvi 205 with TSM v10 for 9900 baht in Bangkok.

The better portable Garmin models will mark where you park and guide you back to your vehicle. You will likely not use that feature very often but if you forget where you parked, it is VERY useful. In my opinion the portable units are more practical not to mention a lot cheaper. Map updates are cheap and easy.

Seems I would be better of with Garmin. Which is the best model to buy (Don't care the price) and which shop would you recommend in BKK?

Also is there a dependancy on Thai Script for Navigating to and display. And will there be POI for example can I select from say Paragon or Pantip in english and it will know?

Many Thanks

N.

after a quick browse at garmin I am guessing the Nuvi 1690 is the top model - Is it available in Thailand and will the nulink work in Thailand?

The latest Nuvi has a 5 inch screen. It is the Nuvi 1460. It will do most anything you want. Below are two links. Eagle is in Chiang Mai but they will ship anywhere and can be paid with a simple bank transfer from an ATM. Gadgetrend is in Bangkok and has the same deal.

Thanks Gary. Appreciate it.

The indash units look nice, factory look without the wires running around. I think Honda uses Garmin units, easy to update the maps and I think around 900 - 2000 baht to update those maps.

I own the Nuvi 1460 and the Nuvi 310, Nuvi 1460 sitting on the dash.

My choice would be the Honda built-in unit, no need to worry if someone will break in to steal your GPS... less conspicuous. (for those who want to argue... yes yes some thief can steal the in-dash factory units as well... or the entire car for that matter blah blah blah).

But I own both, I use the Nuvi 310 for traveling without the car, if cost is no object, get a smaller GPS unit to put in your pocket shirt easily.

Good luck.

I have a Civic Navi and can confirm that it is a Garmin based unit. The unit is delivered with a Thai map. The menu and voice can be changed to English, but all street/town names will be in Thai. The GPS unit is mounted in the boot of the car and has a silver sticker to seal the access door. If you remove this sticker you can open the door and remove the sd card and insert any other Garmin map sd Card. I am very happy with it, however am trading in the car for an SUV.

Honda will change/update the software so that the street/town names appear in English if you ask them.

Did this on my CRV Prestige with factory installed GPS.

I think there is also a safety consideration. You have to take your eyes off the road for a longer period of time when checking an in dash unit. A unit mounted on top of the dash is easier to see at a glance.

You only need to listen to the pleasant woman guiding you, no need to look at the GPS :)

Will Traffic ever come to Garmin GPS in Thailand. The ETA's and route planning in BKK are just a lot of the times wrong. I see google maps on the iphone is showing traffic conditions where is it getting its info from?

Up to the minute traffic updates for Bangkok, by iphone or GPS. :):D

I understand it is from the phones of other people driving on that particular road at the same time. A clever concept, really. You've got Google Maps on your phone, your GPS is activated, and Google uses this data for the benefit of you and other drivers. It works on all phones that have Google Maps, not just the iPhone, and at home you can check the traffic situation on the desktop computer. There must be a high number of Google Maps for Mobile users in Thailand, particularly in Bangkok, despite the cost of data subscriptions.

Data subscription charges are down to 650THB for unlimited data so hopefully the more the merrier. Just wish Garmin could incorporate something similar regarding the traffic on google.

Seems pretty accurate to me on the iphone....

Indeed, very clever! Is the service a specific application unique to iphone or is it Google Maps that provides the application?
