Theres cheap and no comfort or cheap and lots of comfort..

1000 baht will get you a room at the brand new hotel opposite gullivers.... really nice rooms. lcd tv, dvd player, large tropical shower, swimming pool...then the hotel Villa Resort next to the old Vientane....cost 800baht...little rooms but tvs/bathroom/swimming pool etc..

then there are load of grotty shared bathroom... 500 baht or less....

i know i'd rather go without 3 bottles of beer and have a nice comfortable room...than save 500 baht for a grotty hole.....

200-2000 baht per night. Starts at about 200 for cheapest fan rooms. Around 500 for a small, clean air con room with own bathroom. The main thing I'd be concerned about is noise level from construction, which doesn't have much to do with price as construction could be anywhere. Just walk around the area, and off the main road too, and check things out.

I find the best way to find out about rooms somewhere is to go to the location in Google maps, right-click, choose "what's here?", click on the little red or green tag, click on "search nearby" in the pop-up window, type in "hotel" or "guest house" or whatever you want, and press enter.

This will give you the whole gamut of whatever you are looking for in that area, usually with reviews and prices for most hotels and guest houses. I've used this for Thailand, Europe, and N.America when I'm planning a trip. You will be able to get a feel for what's available, and know exactly where the place is (which is handy when you arrive). If you're looking for bargain basement prices, you should check the Thorntree Forum or google for "guesthouse bangkok" or "khaosan".

Hope this helps!

Still you can find Di Caprio's "The Beach" Style rooms for a 200 baht/day

Even cheaper: 80>120 baht/day... check out for Popiang (soi kima... oh sorry, soi rambutri!)

Here is it :)

for peaceful rooms you have to move away from khasosan - check phra athit by the river, there are at least 2 good guest houses new mary 2 and apple guest house. Last time stayed there 5 years ago, so prices did change, but they were always the best value for money.

as it's high season now, do not expect khaosan to be chaep - it's still touristy place

Guaranteed you don't get a room for 80baht... love to see a 200 baht room..please post photos when you find one...

room/no windows/grotty flea infested bed clothing/no ventilation/no air con/

maybe i'm getting old..but really spending the extra 800 baht on air con/tv/swimming pool/fridge/bathroom is so much better...

I always try to educate my friends about this when they visit me...normally they go off do the cheap sh1t and then we meet up i book a nice room for a 1000 baht and they are like......"wow....if only i had known this"... :D

you did know...i told you already but you didn't listen... :)

anyway..enjoy...your stay in your "beach" style rat hole...

well, you are likely getting your sanuk by enormous prejudice and unability to see facts as they are; NOT as you think. This mainly to reconfirm the eternal narrow-mindedness af the archetypal TV-posters. And then to realise that beer is also cheaper a little furhter away from Khao Sarn. But why rant about all that as it sover-obvious clear that your ''advice'' is not taken serious at all?

Under 150 you only get dorm beds-not private rooms. And most dorms have become used and picky to nasty westerners and only hire to Japanese and Koreans. BTW; JPNese are great sources of where its cheap-their guidebooks still list them (other as LP). But a short walk away from the madness brings nice, though small rooms in a clean building, river views, bed, fan, desk+chair and space to put luggage and clothes, bathroom shared.

LP/Thorntree is also not used to that anymore-thats the imprint of the flashpacker. Try sites like khaosanroad, travelfish for more info. Oh-and mr. Sanuk-quite nice AC rooms with all the fittings come from 4/500 thb.

Mamas Guest House has been in the Japanese Loney Planet edition for years , placed in the small soi between Khao San Rd and Ramputree road where the small farmasy is. Single room 150 B dobbelt 175 B, dorm. 70 B My wife sister of law has it now and I think that the prices are the same as last year. :)

See... I knew.

Good old times.

I must say I have beautiful memories of KSR in the nineties. Great atmosphere, good feeling, big excitation. Err, maybe I was just 15 years younger :)

Oh, if you happen to have a jackhammer operating outside your window at 7am, you will care. :)

The cheapest rooms are as others have mentioned in Soi Rambuttri and Phra Ahtit road, there's also a few up Samsen road.

I've never seen anything cheaper than 150 baht, you could possibly get it cheaper in a mom and pop guesthouse if you promise to eat in their restaurant as well.

Stay away from anything mentioned in Lonely Planet! Prices are sure to have gone up and quality and service gone down.

Keep going on Soi Rambutri past Popiang, past The Gecko Bar, right down to where it curves to the left. But go straight ahead into the dark passage. That's where you'll find The Armpit. (Thai name is similar, but obviously ....)

Last I heard, rooms there were around 100 baht. Wouldn't stay there myself, but if OP wants something in the area that's super cheap ....

Have never stayed at Kao Sarn area myself. But after reading posts in this thread, I wonder how safe the lodgings are in the event of a fire.

Correct... at the back end of the sub-soi, after Shoshana and Lanta pizza.

That place was one of my playground a decade... or so ago :D

Otherwise, I don't know if still exist... upstairs "Hole in the wall" on Kao San they use to have rooms under 100 bahts... ask the katoeys around -no kidding- they always know cheap places!

I'm not quite getting the gist of your post...however the OP has stated he's a teenager so doesn't mind noise and most probably a little hovel would be ideally suited and be just perfect for his experiences.

As i am not a teenager anymore I prefer my comfort which means nice hotels/clean bedding/air con/bathroom/tv/satelite/location/gym/swimming pool/restaurant etc....

all available for the 1000 -1500 mark....

I recommend Amarin Inn which started at I think 650 per night for air con, satellite tv, double bet and en suite bathroom. Not the biggest bathroom and it was a patch difficult to find, but comfortable and quiet so good for me.
