Hello

Does anyone know if dairy home yogurt has sugar in the plain yogurt? The people in the store will tell me it does not. But it is so sweet it is hard to believe. I have heard that they treat the cows better than most places. thanks for any info.

If you are looking for an unsweetened plain yoghurt try Yolida, Natural Flavour, unsweetened, unstirred and low fat; I get mine from Carrefour or Tops Supermarket but I am in Phuket - should have it in BKK

Most of Thai plain yoghurt has sugar added to suit Thai taste buds. I'm talking about the 150 g beakers. NESTLE might be the only exception. I always buy YOLIDA Low Fat Yoghurt. It says: Natural Flavour UNSWEETENED > Nothing Artificial Added, 450 g for 53 Baht. . If you live in Pattaya like me you can get it almost everywhere: CARREFOUR, Foodland, Villa Market, possibly evcen Tesco Lotus.

I need unsweetened yoghurt because I'm diabetic.

If you live in Nakhon Nowhere you try to get NESTLE plain yoghurt. That should be available.

Yep, Dairy Fresh has lots of sugar and other ingredients that are bad for you. That's probably why it tastes 10 times better than any other yogurt...I suspect it has a higher cream content than most yogurts. Tastes like ice cream and good for you--impossible!

Thanks for the info. I though so even they told me no sugar. Too bad... I actually don't like dairy home too much. I just heard that they treat the cows well. I have been eating yoladia, or what ever it is called, and it is fine tastes pretty good. I like full fat yogurt too but I guess beggars can't be choosers. The goat yogurt is good to but they are also a big dairy that treats the goats quite sadly. There website is actually proud of this. I have also been eating the "organic yogurt" in the heavier plastic tub with the red top. I'm pretty sure it has no sugar but any way to tell if it is really organic. There is no brand name on it. I also tried ymm yogurt in central world but it tastes like it has sugar. There is true organic yogurt from the US and France, I think, in central market but it is 120 and 140 b for a small cup. Too much. I have been trying to avoid nestle as their practices in developing counties are horrific but not always the easiest thing in Thailand.

One option for no added sugar yogurt is to make your own. Not sure I did it correctly, but I tried to upload a pic of a unit similar to one I use. I bought it here for 800 baht. Have seen it at Lemon Farm as well as some of the shows at Impact. Very easy to use, buy a litre of milk, add some commercial yogurt as starter, plug in, then forget for 12 hours. Once you make the first batch, save a little to start the next one. This lets you decide what milk to use...I use Meiji non-fat most of the time as I then strain it to make greek-style yogurt and yogurt cheese Think it's more economical than buying and definitely more eco-friendly. Since Meiji now comes in the 1/2 gallon bottle, I use food safe water bottles that fit in the yogurt maker. You can also easily make yogurt Indian style...boil the milk, add starter, leave out on the counter until it's curdled, then refrigerate.

I also recommend making yer own...I have a Severin 7 pot yogurt maker (google) that I hand carried from the UK but they can be ordered from amazon.com...

I use any full fat milk available and a pot of whatever 'unsweetened' plain yogurt I can find for starter...always get a nice custardy texture and wonderful flavor as a result, better than anything commercially available in Thailand IMO...

I recommend making your own as well if you can. I use an Indian method where you heat the milk first and have never needed to use a machine, just wrap the bowl in a towel as it's pretty hot here in Thailand. When it's ready put in the fridge for a while, after that I stir in some homemade mangosteen jam, fabulous!

The Lemon Farm has some pretty good unsweetened and low fat yogurt. There is also a local Thai brand at the Villa you can buy that is unsweetened. Personally though, I like to make my own. Heat up a liter of milk, stir until you see the first bubble (just before boiling point), turn off, set on the stove for 24-hours then put it in the fridge, and add fruit and sweetener to taste-I add fresh blueberries and honey to mine and it is great. Just be careful to not burn the milk.May take you a couple times before you get it right. I know it did for me. Good luck.
