Article On The Thai Sex Trade

I saw this article in Prospect magazine this morning.

January was ugly in our part of Bangkok. We live near Soi Nana, off Sukhumvit Road, a famous tourist site catering for a specific sort of visitor: middle-aged western men. They come to Nana for one reason....

Nope! The author of that article, Alex Renton, sounds as if he spent his entire time down Soi Nana.

What I cannot understand, though, in what is quite a well written article, is the avoidance of asking two fundamental questions and the assumptions often made because of this:

1. Is it wrong for men (older men) to pay women for s*x? And why?

2. Is it wrong for poor women to make money by charging for sexual activities? If so why?
