Which Place U Recommend To Live For Respiratory Troubles?

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I am 21y old & have some respiratory health problems. After doctors recommendation, I want to move to some pollution free city near sea coast in Thailand. Where suspended particals quantity in air is MINIMUM, sky is clear & temperature is moderate and consistent throughout. I'll be on tourist visa.

I found Hua-Hin to be the best place(while searching online). I need your recommendations.

My top priorities are:

1) Better health.

2) Internet connection, wherever I am, with atleast 526Kbps speed..

3) Nice hot chicks! :) Can't skip the fun in Thailand.

4) Decent/cheap living expense.

Thanks!

I've had some interesting times with asthma since most of the world moved from CFC to HFA ventolin (salbutamol) inhalers (around the turn of the century in Australia and HFA all the way since I arrived in Thailand in 2005.

Here in Rayong I live around 5km inland from the Maptaphut refineries, and seem to be stuck on between 10-15mg prednisolone each day, and can make a ventoling last for between 6-10 days, providing I get a lot of aerobic activity to keep the lungs strong. Nonthaburi was even worse, especially north of Chaengwattana, and the smog of Bangkok was not all that much fun.

Conversely, two places I have lived near the coast in Chanthaburi, and also down in Nakhon Si Thammarat, have had much fresher air and clean sea breezes to really see a reduction in my daily dosages of salbutamol and prednisolone. With similar sorts of mild aerobic exercise throughout the week, the ventolins seem to last up to two weeks, and I have been able to gradually reduce the dosage of prednisolone from 10mg to 5mg to 2.5mg to zero over three weeks, and believe that if I had been able to have remained in Chanthaburi or Nakhon for an extended time period, then the pred' would have been very rarely necessary at all.

That's point one covered, I hope.

On point 2, I would assume that wifi in some mid-range accommodation is probably available at either of the towns I've had good respiratory luck, on point 4, the costs of living seem cheaper than Bangkok providing you get along well with the people and stick with the places that do the right thing by you, and point 3 is probably a foregone conclusion if you're anywhere in Thailand, providing you behave reasonably decently in public and take good care of the nasal hair and stuff like that. :)

I have aspergillosis and have found the clean air and general weather on north Phuket to be very good - have not needed to use inhalers for several years :)

Thanks for sharing great experience! You are awesome! :D

I did some search about Chanthaburi and it to be seems ok state. Would you mind telling me exactly which city you live in so that I can come n join ya! :D I mean, I am trusting you 100% at the moment looking for the finest destination! Hope you can connect the dots for me.

Most of the sea beaches like Laem Sing etc dont have night clubs or night life, my point 3 will be left blank there! :D

Ric', I must admit to not being much of a night owl now I'm almost 42 and usually back home by 8pm five nights a week at least, but in Chanthaburi, a few years ago when I was around 100 years younger, there is a gamut of restaurants and one particular nightspot with excellent live music on stage all within a few hundred metres along the main road by the beautiful lake they have in the centre of town.

There are also quite a few venues where you might make someone happy for the evening if you have the penchant, although I'm not exactly in the best of health and no longer the stud I used to be, so I tend to just go to the concert places for the music before getting back home to my cable tv and a quiet beer in my room alone.

Currently, I'm living in a little apartment in rural Rayong known as Nikhom Pattana (aka resettlement village), but have motorbike; will travel. Still, they wonderful people here at these apartments just knocked on my door with a Happy New Year card and a personal diary for 2010, and so I have decided to do the right thing and stay in this place, (where there is not much nightlife unless you want to make the trip to Mapthaput, Ban Chang, or Amphur Rayong), for the coming month, and then make it to Chanthaburi in late January.

Amphur Chanthaburi is also only around 50km or 40 minutes bike ride from Pong Nam Ron up highway 317, where the right-hand turn at the traffic lights will get you to the Cambodian border, which I should be doing before Jan 29th.

One interesting point about Chanthaburi is the Cathedral which is quite historical, and I have noticed a rather unique sort of friendship and tolerance when I have been there, that might seem impossible to say, but they are (respectfully) the nicest people I have ever encountered even in all of Thailand (and that must qualify as the nicest people in the entire world), although I don't know the cause exactly, but tend to see the mix of different faiths as one possible reason, apart from the country town atmosphere that Chanthaburi has every day except Fridays, when the streets are swarming with international gem dealers.

So, I'd be glad to catch up for a beer anywhere along the coastline of Rayong whenever you're around this neck of the woods, or will catch up in Chanthaburi at the end of next month. I can't book out of here at the end of this month now - not after they just sent the cleaning staff up to offer me a gift and a card for the New Year.

Secluded if perhaps you intend to drive by car/motorbike to/from Bangkok! There are many cheap flights every day to/from Bangkok, which takes just over 1 hour.

Of course, it really depends on what you intend to do. I am actually away on a software contract in Pattaya, which is a location that I would only recommend for the overweight, oversexed and over sixties.

When I'm in Phuket, I stay in north Phuket, but the air is clean throughout the island - no smoke from burning trees etc that you can get in Chiang Mai. As for nightlife, Patong has a lot to offer. My own location in north Phuket apparently offers only one woman of easy virtue, and I have declined to join the back of the queue.

What respiratory problem do you have? Phuket has 2 very good private hospitals if you need check-ups etc.

Hey Simon,

Actually, I get caught by throat and post-nasal infections quite often.. almost every 10-15 days and need to take complete 5 days course of powerful anti-biotics to cover up. Doctors express the reason being the suspended particals and pollution in air. I have already gone through the immune therapy and conquered all the allergies but some bacterias still affect me.

Looking out for Patong now..

Thanks for the response all you guys! I am still looking for more options! :)

:) I lived in Hua Hin for 7 years and found the air to be very good. There is no industry and a seabreeze. It is close to Bangkok and has a lot (now) Farang oriented scene. If you look around and be sensible you can find some pretty good accomodations. I have ravelled all over Thailand and Hua Hin is my favorite

Thank you IISO & transam! I hope to get better results coming there. Hua-Hin & Chanthaburi still seems to be best for me. More recommendations still welcome... :)

Nakhon Si Thammarat, have had much fresher air and clean sea breezes to really see a reduction in my daily dosages of salbutamol and prednisolone.

I live in Nakhon Si Thammarat now. I took daily medication (ventollin & becotide inhalers) for mild asthma for many years before stopping* about 9 months before I came to live in Thailand 4 years ago. I get a bit tight chested when it's very humid but no big deal.

Mark...

* I read about the Buteyko technique, tried it for myself, decreased medication after a few days, took a full training course, then stopped medication completely 3 months later with doctor's agreement. Went from ventolin 3-4 times a day for 20 years, to just three times in total in those last 3 months. Becotide had to be decreased slowly.

Many places here you just have to try them and see what happens.

I have severe lung problems, Emphysema, ashma, pulmonary fibrosis and find the bigger cities really play havoc on my breathing ability.

I found that the higher mountain ranges or at least a place where the wind comes off of them is preferable for me and my condition's.

Only thing you have to be careful with is when the Thai's are burning rice fields/garbage.

Can make a escape to the Coast during this time and helps a bit.

Overall my ability to breath easier has improved and pain levels have subsided since I have been living here.

Not much nightlife out in the sticks though :)

Before you actually move into a place, ask a Thai person to ask your neighbours if anyone in that area burns rubbish / plastic regularly. It's very, VERY common. Ask a FEW people.

Thanks a bunch guyz!

I am arriving there on 27th this month.. Will sure visit all the places mentioned here & then decide where it suites me best. I hope language barrier wont be a big deal! lol

Please let me know if someone is from Bangkok here and want to meet and help me out a bit getting more familiar with the country and places.. I would greatly appreciate that. :)
