PM to dissolve House if Opposition helps amend charter

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Monday he was ready to dissolve House if the Opposition joins forces in amending the 2007 Constitution and stop the red shirt rallies that bring about social division.

"I have no problem with dissolving House, if that helps strengthen the economy and if the Opposition gives cooperation in amending the Constitution. I believe we will take not longer than six to seven months (to amend charter).

During this period, if Khun Thaksin (Shinawatra) and the red shirts show that they do not resort to violence, I am glad to (dissolve Parliament), no problem,'' he said.

Abhisit was responding to Thaksin's call for House dissolution and reinstating 1997 Constitution as part of his negotiation with the government.

Abhisit said the government was ready to negotiate with Thaksin if he first abides by the law by serving his jail term.

Abhisit said when Thaksin was in power, he called a meeting of all smaller parties seeking to amend the 1997 Constitution. "Now he wants the same constitution only to restore his own status. It is not to do with the system,'' Abhisit said.

Abhisit said the government was ready to clarify an allegation from Pheu Thai Party party list MP Jatuporn Prompan who has threatened to reveal a new classified report that he claimed carry damning information on how the government plans to take action against Thaksin.

That stammering you hear is Puea Thai members being confronted by reason. The next sound will be them trying to deflect, divert, subvert, and camoflauge. The funny thing is - it was Puea Thai that wanted to amend the charter in the first place. They don't care about reconcilation - just helping their master get the money.

Amending the Constitution will take 6 or 7 months. Better idea wold be to take the American one.

It was drawn up by some very intelligent men and served the country well for close on 200 years.

It is FREE now they don't use it anymore.

Now who said that ??? :)

"stop the red shirt rallies that bring about social division" - rallies are not the reason for social devision on the poor workers and the possesing ruling class and won't disappear with constitutional changes or with the new parliament.

All I want is peace, so if there is one thing that most fear is that those 'peaceful protesters' will start throwing things, destroying and possibly like last time killing some. That is one thing hard to deny no matter how impartial I try to be.

So let there be peace!

Use the People's Republic of China constitution. It's as absurd and worthless as any Thai one, probably more so.

I have just tried to explain, why it's beyond politicians to prevent rallies, protests and strikes. They will be happening untill there is a social devision, and in thailand, still partially in feudalism or even slavery (see burmese workers), those devisions and injustice, which they bring, are huge

The opposition are always supposed to support government.

Achieving goals through disagreeing and then negotiating and compromising are what parliament is all about, after all the government is not supposed to represent only those who voted for them but the entire nation.

What a shame that many don't seem to understand that that is the way it is supposed to work, and why.

Nothing new from things said 9 months ago nor 6 months ago,

just Puea Thai is more on the ropes and if Jatuporn is their idea

of a leader of stature for the nation, they are in more trouble than they think.

They walked out of amendment talks as some sort of power play,

and as seems their typical plight, it didn't work, now they actually

have to think how to back track to get back in the game.

We might actually have been in substantive amendment and election talks NOW,

if P.T. hadn't have tried to powerplay itself out of that game. So they themselves

stalled this 6 months... yet again.

And nobody believes anymore the pathetic spin Jutuporn puts on purloined government docs.

I really wonder who much he is paying to get this stuff, he sure can't use it well.

Acting like a punch drunk fighter all mouth, and woozy from powerderpuff hits,

no foot left un-shot by their own weapons; our dear Peua Thai Party on the job.

Any constitution is better than the American one. It was a dismal failure.

Agree, the American Constitution is a good one...been around since 1787. The initial constitution was not perfect (but what is) and has been amended 27 times (i.e., update amendments) to keep up with the times. However, Thailand constitutions are kinda like magazines in that you throw them away after a short while and go get a new one.

Try the Soviet model, or the PRC one.

Then of course there's the unwritten one of the UK whose monarch is the head of state of Australia, New Zealand, Canada among others - governors general and all of that, recently hurrah  of locally grown vintage.

Germany and Japan haven't done too badly after getting new constitutions during post WW2 occupations.

Yes, transport the US Constitution to Thailand. After all, Washington DC and Bangkok were founded contemporaneously in history. Look at them since and to the present.
