New To Garmin Gps And Need Help

Featured Replies

I happen to be thankful that some of you already have some kind of experience using this garmin GPS. I have bought mine from Singapore. I did a look already on Garmin website, it does not contain any maps for thailand. Since I am new how do I

1. Get a thailand map ( I need the most updated map for all around thailand and can use in the southern provinces )

2. How do I install the map on the Garmin

3. Are the maps free or do I have to pay for them ( if have to pay no problem but can I get it as download or do I have to buy the map somewhere. I am in koh samui.

4. Do I need a SD Card or can I do without it.

Last but not least my Garmin Details

Nuvi 765

Look forward to all your help

1. Try this one from Garmin: City Navigator® Southeast Asia NT

2. If you'd opted for download, you can either place it in Nuvi's internal memory or data card.

3. View the above link for price, there're 2 options: download or data card (microSD / SD).

4. See answer for Q#2.

Another option is the map from ESRI. I'm not familiar with this map, maybe others can comment.

You can get the Garmin City Navigator Southeast Asia NT v4.5 from a retailer on a plug and play microSD card, the ESRI Thailand Street Map v10 comes on a customized CD and would require basic computer skills to install the map file in the GPS memory or to a microSD card. The Thailand Street Map map is a better all around map, if you are going to be doing any 4-wheeling in the boondocks then City Navigator Southeast Asia has better road detail in most rural areas --- either one will get the job done nicely. I have them both installed on my Garmin 205.

Has anyone tried www.SecondHandGPSmaps.com yet?

Sorry Gunga - I don't reckon it passes the smell test.

As far as I am aware, all legitimate copies of Garmin maps are tied to a particular Garmin GPS ie you can only unlock the map for that unit. Otherwise, what is to stop me buying a legit map on a CD or SD card, and letting all my mates (and anyone on the internet for that matter) make a copy of it. Having said that, I am not sure how the maps you buy on SD cards from, eg EBay, work.

If someone reckons 2nd HandGPSMaps are OK, I can suggest even cheaper ways of getting hold of the maps - but forum rules prevent me from doing so of course :D

BTW, their website seems to operate from a server located in Bulgaria - good luck with that :)

Garmin sells pre-programmed datacard (plug & play) maps on microSD/SD card that are not unlocked to any particular GPS, the map can be moved and used with multiple units..

I have bought Thailand-maps from them on two occasions.

The map comes on a micro-sd card with adapter and I have used it on a Garmin 205, 250 and 255 device and I think you can use it on any Garmin device with a sd-slot. I was not able to copy the sd-card.

I have paid through PayPal and the map was delivered within one week to my European address shipped from Bulgaria.

yet?

I bought a SE Asia map which includes Thailand from a company called Grarminator. The map card was sent from Bulgaria so it may be a related venture. I had difficulty getting the map to load and took to an electronics shop that sells GPS and they went in the back and did something and it now works. Did not really try it around the country as on short holiday but the company did send the map card and it works. I believe it was a refurbished map (perhaps just used) and although they said it would take 2 weeks by mail it took about a month to arrive. I contacted them as it did not arrive when expected and they sent a copy to another address. After the original showed up later I let them know and they just asked I return the second one which I did.

Thanks for the info. :)

Free Garmin maps for the whole world can be found here: garmin.na1400.info/routable.php

I have been using http://rotweilermaps.com/ for a few years now. He has all of Thailand along with numerous other asian countries. You send him money via paypal and then give him the GPS unit ID. After that you just download the map to the unit. I prefer to download it to my computer. From there I install it on Garmin Mapsource. Now I can use the map for planing routes or finding points of interest from my computer as opposed to dealing with the small screen on the GPS. You also have the capability to load maps from Mapsource straight to your GPS.
