There are two bus companies out of Mor Chit to Udon that I like, CHAN TOUR and AIR UDON. Both run the double deck buses with 2&1 seating, very comfortable. Also, both run express, with only a short stop in Khon Kaen for fuel. About B450 Don't believe many of the ones that call themselves VIP...most are not.

The problem is that in Mor Chit, if you ask at an info booth, they will tell you B700-900 and call a tout who gives them a kickback to take you to the ticket window. If you walk to the third level where they sell the tickets, even the security guard will try to pass you to a tout. Just shake them all off and wander around. Most of the booths are marked in Thai with little English but if you persist, you will find them.

There is an overnight train from Hualamphung Station that leaves at around 8pm and arrives in Udon around 8am. A 2nd class sleeper is about B750, try to get a lower berth.

If you are travelling alone, a 1st class compartment isn't worth it as you will find yourself stuck with a room-mate at some point along the way.

OK i will try to tell you what booth is chan tours, tell your taxi to go to upper level (north east departures)

enter through the 2nd or 3rd door

walk to the other long side of the hall where the booths are (chairs are looking in that direction)

at the other long side turn 180 degrees.

look to your left

you will see a series of booths half way the hall

the first one is chan tours with tickets (2+1) to udon thani around the 430-450 baht, just don't take seat 1a to c unless you want to hit your head against the tv

busses leave about every hour, will take 8 hours.

From BKK expect to pay about 400 baht on taxi so total about 900 baht, makes that air asia ticket very cheap :) and fast

Never done the bus but have done the overnight train ,i think its about 380 baht to khonkaen so should imagine a little more to udon ,from around 457. its a long trip about 8 1/2 hours to KK so can add another hour or 2 to udon, you do get a bed of sorts though.

I have just got a price of 5,598 BAHT return with air asai for 2 of us but thats for april so think the price is up for songkran.

You could hire a car for around 1200 baht from thai rent a car and drive up dropping the car at udon will cost around 500 baht on top for gas but still is cheap if your not travelling alone.
