I can't immediately think of a good temporary pay as you go service but internet shops are widely available with prices as low as 40 baht per hour. So unless you need security etc then perhaps leave your netbook at home? Connection to the Internet in Thailand tends to incur hefty up front charges unless you are resident and have a phone line, CAT offer a service that would suit you but you would have to buy a USB doohickey for around Baht 10,000 first.

If your netbook can use Wi-Fi, you can probably just connect up through the passwords they'll give you at the hotel reception from free to 450thb per month so I've found - tomorrow is the last day of the month for this wi-fi account for me, so I just go down to the hotel reception and pay another 450 thb and it's on again in a matter of seconds, but I can't use my Compaq when I'm riding my motorbike on the country roads, only at places like KFC or Coffee Today or the hundreds of other free wi-fi places I find at the traffic lights in the city, when on the go.

USB modems might be best to bring from home, but built-in wi-fi seems to come with the air-cond hotel room nowdays from what I have noticed. If your netbook has wi-fi, you should be right, and if it doesn't then maybe get it before you travel?

DTAC.. 1100bt a month, prepaid unlimited access.

Make sure your Nokia mobile phone has EDGE & GPRS as it will be your modem.

Install the Nokia Data Suite on your netbook b4 leaving home.

Slow but sure connection. I've been using it for more than a year.

Go to any DTAC shop in a mall, buy a DTAC sim and 1100bt in prepaid cards

Call 1678 to get connected by good English speaking staff. :)

If you don't have a Nokia phone, you can buy a Nokia 3110C, 2nd hand for 1500 - 2000bt.

Why buy a phone when you can get an usb stick with a sim in it ? Much smaller and better. Maybe even a bit cheaper.

I have a blackberry and can use it as a modem when needed. Since I already own the phone, and it works as a modem quite well, why would I buy a separate USB modem?

Also, I don't think the USB modems for sale in Thailand are 2000 baht.....

It might not make sense to buy a phone just for that purpose but many people who keep abreast enough of technology to have a netbook also have a GPRS/Edge capable phone already. Some even have 3G capable phones. As far as "better" goes, speeds in Thailand with a USB stick are unlikely to be demonstrably faster than using a phone as a modem if each supports the same protocol.

There are many free wi-fi connections in resturants hotels shopping malls, kfc etc etc all over Thailand, Laos, Vietnam so unless you will be in the middle of no where then i would just use the free wi-fi connecrtions, i used to go to the kfc in Samui and buy a coffee and sit there for 2 hours doing business for free. Other than that stick with your Blackberry and pay through the nose, I used mine for a month and got a 600 quid phone bill. Also if you have a Blackberry then i hope that it is an open phone or you will not be able to use any other chip other than your contract chip in it. Good luck

Probably so, given that 3G HSDPA USB sticks sell for as little as 700 baht outside of Thailand.

The OP has/will have a USB Modem, so will have the pick of the three main networks.

Maybe some will already have a phone, but not all new mobiles are easy to unlock, so whilst it might be an option in their country, it may not be quite so useful abroad. Plus of course you then have the power angle. You are using your mobile's battery. Use Bluetooth and your battery goes even faster. Otherwise you have a power cable and a USB cable attached to phone.

USB modems are just easier to use.

Hopefully that's put that argument to rest...

You can get them virtually free in the UK.

You can choose from Time Limited to Unlimited packages. So there's a lot of flexibility for the casual and the constant user.

Could have been less but i was not sure so i thought better to quote a higher price. I think they were around a 1000 or so were different makes and brands. They also came with a couple of 100 hours free time on them.

You wrote 1500 baht in your previous post. Make up your mind. The GPRS/EDGE USB modems go for between 1300 and 2000 baht in Thailand. Though now you should be able to pick a 3G up for the higher figure now.
