This thread has no real purpose , the newspaper article had it all wrong and Airfrance/KLM has put out a refutal on the matter , paying for an extra seat is up to the passenger and quite a few have done so , their money was refunded when the plane did not fill up .

Two US carriers do charge for obese passengers .

There is a chance, that fares will drop slighly as well

There's also a chance Thaksin will come back to Thailand to a hero's welcome!

One's about as likely as the other.

Maybe there's a niche market here for someone to set up Jumbo Airlines where all the seats are extra wide to accomodate all sizes of passengers??? They could even have extra wide aisles and extra wide trolley dollies.

If they add a smoking section they'll be my favourite airline, even if the hostesses are ugly and the food is inedible.

In that case we'll have to call it Social Lepers Airways :D

I just hope the oversized passengers don't object to the smokers :)

Maybe we should have a poll. I would vote to sit next to the bloke in the photo. He would make me look 10 years younger. :D

Smoking on planes is a bad idea really.

The land luggage needs addressing as well. Should only be pushchairs, babies meal, and duty free. What people must carry in it beggers belief. Can someone tell me what they carry in them. I never have anything in hand luggage except duty free!

You must be one of the lucky ones who have never had a bag go missing. Never put anything in the checked bags that you absolutely need to use the next day.

I a reminded of travel in a shared taxi in Cambodia

where all falangs are considered large.

It is normal to:-'

sit an extra passenger in the driver's seat

sit 2 in the front passenger seat either one in front of the other or side by side

sit 5 on the back seat

there is a falang surcharge for not being small.

About time , not that obese people are not wonderful human beings , it just sucks to have to sit next to a sweaty heavy breathing pig.

Jimmy, it amazes me to no end how morons like yourself take the time out of your day to show the rest of the world that people like you are living next to the rest of us. What a pity indeed.

Now aint that the truth. If only we could only bring home this reality to the rest of the rocket scientists:= what a relief.

Weight does not decide obesity. Except in later years. What about a 160kG athlete??

How about people with shoulders wider than 43cm?? Mine are and my fat is on my gut protruding forward not sideways.

Work it out for yourself poindexter(s)!

Yes, all big people are pigs.

Mate if you ever looking for a management job let me know, from my point off vieuw you are a excellent people person right for the job.

The other good thing is, if you have that job you can travel first class so dont need to worried about big people.

Regarding the posts that discuss charging economy class passengers based on their body weight:

Passenger 1 - Weighs 100 kgs, is 6' 2" tall and athletic build. Seat width ok but knees probably under his chin :D

Passenger 2 - Weighs 100 kgs, is 5' 4" short and very overweight. Cannot fit comfortably into the seat width without 'spilling over' into next seat. No problem with kness, feet don't touch the floor :D

What i am trying to demonstrate above is that size NOT weight should be the deciding factor. If a passenger cannot reasonably fit into the seat they have paid for and require additional space then they should pay for it.

I know, i know, defining 'reasonably fit' will create another discussion in its own right :)

ps

Nothing against those that are 5'4" and weigh 100 kgs. :D

Agree, one good thing about the new regulations is:

If you have Anorexia they give you a discount off 50%, this is only if they have 2 booked at the same fleight as they can placed them in one seat.

Wondering if they get a discount on the meals as well. :D

Well, if we're gonna talk about pet peeves: let's fine the pax that can't sit down with falling like Shamu into the pool.

Good Idea:

*All black passengers traveling to Bangkok please please make your way to gate C5 for immediately boarding.

*All fat passengers traveling to Bangkok please please make your way to gate D2 for immediately boarding.

*All white passengers traveling to Bangkok please please make your way to gate E5 for immediately boarding.

What is you next idea:

Fat people start there own cinema.

Maybe the airlines should have 4 seat availeble for this passengers as they know that the average height and weight is going up.

A lot of people are missing the point and trying to tie racism into it. No passenger can do anything about their race, but most of them make choices that affect their weight. Regardless of their race, religion, or whatever, a severely overweight person makes it uncomfortable to the people whose space they intrude on. If they have a disability or medical reason for being overweight I think they should be accommodated without cost. If it's just because they eat a lot and rarely get off the couch, why shouldn't they pay for their choices?

And how you going to organize that, i mean selecting between overweight causes by just eating to much, and causes by medical problems.

And there, of course, is the problem. Should someone who requires two seats be admitted without extra charge? Even if it is an illness? If the airplane is sold out, they have cost the airline revenue. And even in the scenario you propose, these kind of people also have a disorder, though it may only be psychological. Would you discriminate for physical illness and against psychical ones? Would each obese passenger require a physical/psychological exam or bring a note from their doctor? As a physician, I guarantee I can find a reason to give all my obese patients a note. Without lying.

By the way, I wish people would stop saying overweight when they mean obese. I weigh 240 lbs and fit easily in a single coach seat. Of course, I'm 6'3". I'm not in control of how tall I am, any more than I controlled my race. Yes, I could afford to lose some weight but even if I got down to my "ideal" weight for my height, I'd still be overweight by some of the definitions above. So, should I be charged extra for my flight? I think it has to be somewhat subjective. If someone needs a belt extension, or if they sit down and flow into the seats on either side, I think an extra charge is justified. And the idea that they might refund the extra of the airplane is not full, sounds okay to me. I think the extra kerosene to propel 300 pounds of flesh (instead of the "average-ideal" passenger's 175 pounds) would be difficult to calculate.

You know what I like to see? Two (or three) flabbies overflowing into each other's seat. Very funny until the time I was caught between two such passengers. I had a quick word with the flight attendant and he very kindly found me a better seat.

I'm a reasonably big guy myself although I can easily fit into a single seat without any of me crossing the arm rest into the next guys space.

The guy who was sitting next to me on a flight from Bangkok to Phuket a while back had the largest pair of muscled arms I've ever seen and he clearly encroached on my space, he certainly wasn't obese or even overweight though. I was very uncomfortable sitting like this, I'm just glad it wasn't a 12 hour flight or I would have left the plane if they didn't find me another seat.
