Hair For Charity?

Featured Replies

I loveeeeeeee absolutely love my long hair

but I suddenly have an idea of wanting to use it for a good cause, and thought would check what people have heard.

I know there is one charity that ask people to send in their hair, which is then given to young kids with a disease that leads them to not have hair (including those with cancer).

However, I was hoping to be more adventurous, and try to sell it off to some kind soul who donates the amount to a charity of my choice.

I did some net search about selling and auctioning hair, and came across this commercial site

http://www.hairwork.com/bidhere.htm

and also this: http://thehairtrader.com/

the prices on there sounds quite high, and I wonder if any of you have any experience or knowledge of anyone who might have purchased hair at such ridiculously high price?

(while I think the prices are high for personal use and gains, if I want to raise money for charity, it should be substantial amount, else its not worth the effort I think....)

so ideas? and also suggestions as to the best way /platform to use to get my auctioning plan out to a high profile/rich clientele?

facebook isnt really an option...... or is it.....maybe I can get friends to donate a combined amount...

ebay?

hmmm, so girls...ideas and suggestions?

Im not in a hurry.....so will be looking at any number of options ........

(if nothing good can be worked out, then Ill keep my hair :) )

try www.locksoflove.org

They make vacuum sealed "prosthetics" as well as traditional wigs for children.

Contact Elton John, he's been known to spend lots of money on hair.

P.S. Don't forgetto post the before and after photos.

Thai people have been known to sell it , for money to eat.

yep, thats the one I was referring to in my post. but I was hoping to sell/auction off so that it makes a relatively good amount of money (not talking crazy over the top , but more than enough for one child

giving it to locksoflove is great, but it serves one child (and ive had my hair for years!! and it will take many more to grow back to anywhere near this length.....)

maybe its a far fetch idea.....but I dont mind exploring :)

please keep the ideas coming everyone

and thanks

Wow I think that's very noble of you, I had never thought one could give / sell hair for charity... (it might be because mine would be worth nothing :) )

So... why don't you just sell it to the highest bidder and then donate the money yourself?

I would....but I have doubts about whether people will actually buy hair.....

Im trying to get ideas on how I can go about raising some publicity so that there are enough people hearing about it, so that there might be one person who will pay a substantial amount for it

(to be honest, I have no idea what Im hoping in terms f substantial....but the 2 sites with people quoting hundreds, even thousand plus dollars for their hair has given me an expectation :) but I wonder if its unrealistic......

(as in I wouldnt do it for 100$ .... for that amount I could get 5 friends to donate 20$ each!)

Pledges from TV members?

1,000 baht per metre?

100 Baht per inch?

5,000 Baht if you shave it all off!!!

But then you'd have to trust TV members to send you the money, or only have it cut when you've received a figure you're happy with.

AND sell it too.

something along the above line is what I have in mind

except:

not for those prices!! 5000 baht is less than 200US$!

considering how I hear TV members are always spending 10,000 baht a night on beer and buying drinks for people, Id expect much more than that for a good cause :D

keep in mind its taken me years to grow my hair to as long as it is

(speaking of which - I dont know too many people whose hair is longer than a meter and would part with it for 1000 baht a meter? :D )

and ofcourse I wouldnt be doing on Thaivisa - cos it is against forum rules to solicit payment, no matter what the cause.

basically, I need ideas for the appropriate platform to do a combination of what you and I have proposed......

ofcourse, need to design an exact plan/options

1. auction with minimum starting bid? risky if there ends up being only 1 person bidding (but could put time frame of 6 months, or unless a satisfactory bid has been reached prior)

2. pledges of varying amounts from friends and anyone else that cares - until it reaches a certain amount (but with this option, so who gets the hair? perhaps no one, and hair still goes to locksoflove)

3. similar donations as above, but this time from people that WANT me to KEEP my hair (ie. Ill give money to charity if you DONT cut your hair....)

I could create a website, but then would need ideas where to promote my site (I could ask friends on FB, but my family would see it and say Im being too much of an attention seeker :))

see my dilemma?

I meant 1,000 Baht per metre per person, or 5,000 Baht per person.

Get 100 people and you've got a nice sum.

Could you do it on eBay or Amazon?

I don't use such sites so don't know what's permitted and what's not. And probably only 1 winning bidder rahter than a sponsored effort which could raise more.

Not allowed to solicit payment on Thaivisa? So all those classifieds are given away for free?

Without photos Migsy, we won't take your word on your lovely long hair I am afraid and therefore won't be able to suggest a worthy cause.

Unless of course the photo below is you in which case I would suggest donating it to Ripleys Believe That Mop?

mine is only about half that long

so Im a lost cause then? :)

yeh.....i wonder if i can try on ebay....to check/gauge interest?

but what if i get some ridiculously low offer, and then would be obliged to go through with the deal!!

I have a friend that had extra long hair. She shaved it off for charity. So it can be done. Myself, I'll keep mine which is half way down my back.

Can't see myself bald.

Patsy - any idea how much she made for the charity?

or did she just donate her hair to them?

which org was it?

cheers :)

PS. Im not thinking of shaving it - just cut off as much as I can....but maybe for the right amount I WOULD shave it....hmmmmm

(at the moment it is just thoughts without any real concrete plan yet)

Usually these things have the highest earning capacity when arranged through your local community. Have a look for a local charity to sponsor the run the idea by them, they will be able to help in promoting it. Jut make it clear that there is a lower limit.

This is not you is it Mig16???

haha told you my hair is only about half that long

and its not blonde......

(I hear blonde hair sells for more money cos its easier to change to any other colour

Boo - Ill try to check, but to be honest a lot of charities/community places around here dont seem to care, unless it is their own idea. hmmmmmm, but no harm asking.....

cheers

To make things simpler Migsy, just cut all your hair off then write a check for a 1000 pounds to your favorite charity. Problem solved.

^^ then why not dye it blonde before you shave it all off????

I think I've ALREADY given enough... :):D

My ex was Portugese and had VERY thick, dark hair. She donated her hair to charity several times.

That is back when "Afros" were popular.

if I had that much money I can spare I wouldnt be trying to come up with other means, or be thinking of parting with my hair that I love so much, would I :)

perhaps James will donate 1000 pounds for me to NOT cut my hair :D

ps. the cause of choice can be Arsenal's charity effort: beagoonerbeagiver.org :D

after the latest collapse, i would think a donation to some children programming would be appropriate pre-match viewing.

anyways, when you finalise the hair thing, we expect before and after pictures.
