THAIS TOP THE 7TH WORLD SCRABBLE CHAMPIONSHIP

Friday, October 24, 2003

24th October 2003, Kuala Lumpur – Panupol Sujjaykorn claimed victory as the first Asian World Scrabble Champion at the 7th World Scrabble Championship (WSC) final played at the Corus Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. Setting yet another record, it was an all-Asian final with Panupol meeting fellow Thai teammate, Pakorn Nemitrmansuk.

The best-of-five final was a tense battle with the players tied at 2-2 in the fourth game, forcing a fifth game as the decider. Panupol emerged victorious in the fifth game with 444 points over Pakorn’s  387, winning him the coveted title of 2003 World Scrabble Champion, US$ 17,500 and the WSC trophy. Second runner up was Andrew Perry (England) followed by Mark Nyman (England) in 4th place and James Kramer (USA) in 5th place. Panupol, 18 also sets the record as the youngest World Scrabble Champion.

Panupol’s spectacular win in this all-Thai final, marks the first time the coveted World Scrabble Champion title is held by a country where English is not the first language.

Philip Nelkon, Scrabble Licensing and Promotions Manager, Mattel Inc. commended the Thai players on their performance at the WSC where all three of their participants finished in the top 10.  He added that Scrabble was widely used in Asia as an English Language teaching aid in schools.

Organised by leading toy manufacturer Mattel Inc. and Scrabble Masters in collaboration with the Malaysian Scrabble Association, the 7th was the largest gathering of players in the history of the World Scrabble Championship since its inception in 1991. Malaysia who hosted the WSC for the first time was also the first Asian country to be given this singular honour.

Currently produced in 30 different languages, including Braille, SCRABBLE is undoubtedly the world’s most popular word game. Since its introduction in 1948, over 100 million Scrabble games have been sold in 121 countries around the world. Today SCRABBLE is played by a wide spectrum of people; from the young socialisers who like to battle it out head –to- head, to the family who loves to learn. Actors Mel Gibson, Keanu Reeves, popstars Kylie Minogue, Sting, Boyzone and entrepreneur Richard Branson are some of the popular personalities who are known to have an appreciation for the game.
