Pakistan man nabbed at airport with 1kg heroin in stomach

BANGKOK: -- Jan 29 (TNA) – A Pakistani man was arrested by Thai customs officials at Bangkok’s Suvaranbhumi International Airport Friday with 90 packets--almost one kg--heroin in his stomach.

Ahmad Shabbir was arrested during immigration procedures when customs officers believed him to be acting suspiciously and required him to pass through an X-ray scanner, finding many bags of unidentified matter in his stomach.

The detainee was ordered to a toilet to defecate and officials found 90 packages of heroin, weighing nearly one kilogramme.

The estimated street value of the heroin is some Bt2.5 million (US$75,000).

Mr Shabbir was charged with possessing and trafficking drugs and is being held at the Narcotics Suppression Bureau for further investigation, said the customs officials. (TNA)

WIKI has this to say, "The whole digestive system is around 9 meters long. In a healthy human adult this process can take between 24 and 72 hours."

They saw that package in his stomach and just asked him to go to the toilet?

Vomiting could have been a better option.

Do they know the difference between the stomach and the intestines?

I am sure they know the difference in the Thai language, before going off with stupid comments like that go read it in Thai and tell me if it makes more sense then.

The facts are the nabbed a drug trafficker it looks like, good on them. Possibly next time they can get Sensei to come check their grammar and the contents of the toilet so they can be sure which part of the body the drugs were present in when x-raying.

Tragic how there'll always be some people who think they wont get caught.

Sure as hel_l he will either have a long time to think about the consequences or look forward to his execution. Not being of Western origin he may well get the death penalty.

Again, A criticism before any real facts are known. Why jump on Thai officials at every chance? They caught the guy!! Nuf Sed!

Read again: they required him pass through an x-ray scanner. That is not the same as the millimetre wave (which is RF) or backscatter airport devices that would show what one might have strapped to his or her body. An x-ray scanner powerful enough to produce imaging adequate to yield stomach contents uses real, ionising radiation, which of course can result in cancer-causing chromosome damage. I do hope that we are not all about to be subject to mandatory x-rays in Bangkok.

"required him to pass through an X-ray scanner"

the new scanning machine, installed just only on Tuesday, is only on departures and it's not an x-ray but microwave. It does not detect internal objects, but only those outside the skin.

as to x-ray mashine is highly harmful for human and only a single picture can be made - and it's not "walk through". X-ray scanner in only used for the luggage.

most probably he was put on the x-ray mashine and than ordered to seat on the toilet, for whatever long it takes - the article doesn't say when he as arrested and when the drugs were confirmed

for sure, now he is "Departing...."

Dead wrong, he is coming in.

The Thai drug supression department have almost destroyed all the groups bring in heroin from the golden triangle into Thailand. Or they have made the trade unlucrative and uncertain. For years this drug has been exported from south asia in huge quantities dirt cheap.

And about him getting the death penalty just because he is not western, thats simply not true, if he was Nigerian he will be eligible to go home 8 years from today. Something about a 'treaty'. I keep wondering what the kingdom get for their leniency.

He's just a mule and maybe even forced into doing it.

And you know this because... ??

Maybe you have some experience?

Sadly many probably dont get caught, so lets give this new machine some credit here. If those will stop or slow down this traffic, then some really good things come out of it.

Customs have a medical x-ray machine at the airport that they can use to x-ray suspects stomachs, this has nothing to do with the new bomb scanners. After that a laxative will do the rest. I don't think they care if it takes 15 minutes or 15 hours to get it out. I doubt they'd be concerned about delaying the man's travels.

Swallowing packets of contra band is a common way of smuggling, why wouldn't they have an x-ray machine?

Actually it's more likely that this guy was the mule that was sacrificed. It has long been believed that the drug lords in Thailand, and those outside of Thailand have cut a deal with The Thai officials. The officials look the other way for a while, and then the drug kingpins feed them a patsy to bust. So the drug dealers make their money, bribe the airport officials, and give them a stooge to make them look good. It's a classic, easy scam. I doubt the guy showed any signs at all. They probably knew who he was before he arrived.
