Urgently Need A Really Good Vet

My friend's dog was diagnosed with hip dislocation, bones are not fractured. The problem is that the dog has only got three legs (another hind leg was amputated a couple of years ago after a motorbike accident). We've been to two vets at Samui, and both claim not enough experience to fix the leg.

Please, if anybody knows of a good orthopedic surgeon, let me know. Any advice what to do will also be appreciated. Thanks.

Yeah, my friend has just come back from their Chaweng office. The vet will be there to talk to us tomorrow.

We fear that Thai vets are not telling exactly what they're thinking when the dog's chances are not good. Maybe there's a retired or vacationing farang vet on Samui? We really wish we had another opinion. If anybody has qualification and desire to take a look at X-rays (I have them available as photos also) or even the dog himself, please please PM me.

for effective surgery/treatment you will have to go to bangkok. try suvannachad animal hospital, they have also therapeutic facilities like lasertherapy, massages, swimming etc.

also the university clinics like chulalongkorn worth a try. maybe you make a trip to bangkok and visit these hospitals/doctors and see where to go from there and which treatment to do. good luck.

vets in samui only basic treatment i had similar problem with dog, vets suggested Phuket, eitherway dog was going to die i knew it ask 2 vets to put it down they refused not buddist way!!!!!!!!!! died overnight but i had arranged for it to be killed next day so saved me the heart ache. put me off ever owning dog in samui as no good vets. the three i know are the hospital near ohms motorbike shop one opposite poste office and one near big c called yang nam fixed my ex landlords dogs broken leg.

We've been to all three already. Thanks everybody, we'll see the vet at Dog Rescue today and then decide what to do.

By the way, has anybody bought dog wheelchairs here in Thailand?

A friend of mine was told by a vet that she(her pet micro poodle) is "better off in Bangkok", went to Dog rescue and the dog is still alive and kicking - and it's a year by now, no re-occurrence!

It came down with partly paralyzed hind legs as a result of tick fever... after recommended treatment by the doc from SDRC gone!

ask for dr pornpan as she is the specialist for bone problems. saw an old german shepherd there which had hip surgery previously and was treated with massages and lasertherapy after.

there is a manufacturer for dog-wheelchairs in bkk, he will measure your dog first and check his needs before making the wheelchair. suvannachad can contact there for you.

I can't find the new thread for this so am replying here.

I am a western trained vet and do work in Thailand from time to time.

From the radiographs (x-rays) this is quite a bad dislocation, but can be repaired. With anaesthesia and traction, can be fixed, but will need followup and an experienced vet to put the dog in a sling while the joint repairs. It will need at least 2 weeks cage rest following the repair - means the owner has to manually take dog outside and support it while it urinates/ defecates. This alone results in many owners just opting for euthanasia, unfortunately.

Without the cage rest there is a high probability of recurrence.

There are many good small animal vets in cities but I would worry that without being able to discriminate, and not knowing your area, I recommend one of the BKK university animal hospitals (Kasetsart and Chulalongkorn are the most experienced). Could opt to leave the dog there in their care until ready to go home.

Please let us know how the case is resolved!!

Also, tell the tech who took the rads NOT to use bare hands - in 20 years their fingers will be horribly disfigured.

Update.

First of all, from the depth of my heart I want to express deepest thanks to the person who PM'ed me from BKK and offered his personal help. The dog owes his life to that person. With absolutely no opportunities at Samui, my friend drove his doggy to BKK. The dislocated hip was popped back into place without surgery, the rear leg is now bandaged up and the dog is therefore immobile for two weeks (exactly as Chingchoke recommends). Here's hoping for full recovery. Thanks for support everybody!
