Tiger Temple Goes To Court

Featured Replies

I have another question.

In 2009, the Tiger Temple became a zoo.

Wild times in Kanchanaburi as the Tiger Temple becomes a zoo

In Thailand, what does that really mean?

Can they officially breed endangered animals? (was this ever illegal?)

Can they transfer endangered animals to other zoos/countries?

What are their new (legal) obligations?

In Thailand, that probably means they were simply able to buy a zoo permit!

I would also like to know more about CWI and their report.

There are many vague stories/opinions going around the internet about the temple.

Here is a link to the CWI report: Tiger Temple

See if you can find anything that goes beyond opinion or speculation.

Thanks. But I read that report quite awhile ago. In some places it is obviously out of date (there has been progress made at the temple, children are not allowed, etc). And some of the statements raise even more questions as they were not backed up by facts, so they fall under the opinion category instead.

And like was mentioned previously, what are their qualifications? And was the person who wrote that report about the Tiger Temple qualified? CWI also talks about reports from tourists and volunteers, but are any of those qualified to offer an opinion? I am of the opinion that the tigers were drugged on my first visit, but I acknowledge that it is merely an opinion from yet another disgruntled tourist. I have no proof.

The internet is awash with reports and opinions about the Tiger Temple. Where are the qualified reports? I emailed one vet who visited the temple but he would not answer my questions. He is a specialist in animal behaviour (for one, I was asking about the harm done to tigers involved in photo shoots - a point brought up in the report), but he replied that he is not qualified to comment. So, who is?

What do you mean by qualified?

Witnesses and experts all come together to put a picture together.

where are the "qualified" supporters? Only those actually employed by the temple - what re their "qualifications"?

What seems to be a problem here is that people don't know what to to with these reports or how to treat them - they keep using words like "evidence and qualified when they really haven't thought about how to judge the situation and come to a reasonable conclusion. these calls are actually rather fcile and overlook the complexities of gathering information about a place that is essentially a master of fraudulent activity.

you are hoodwinking yourselves!

I believe that Tigers come under CITES treaty and are not allowed to be traded or shifted about - you will find no permissions for the temple to do this as they aren't properly registered.

the Sri Racha Zoo is probaly nothing more than a tiger farm - but that's another thread - check out their highly questionable "speed-breeding" techniques

CITES is an international agreement to which States (countries) adhere voluntarily. States that have agreed to be bound by the Convention ('joined' CITES) are known as Parties. Although CITES is legally binding on the Parties – in other words they have to implement the Convention – it does not take the place of national laws. Rather it provides a framework to be respected by each Party, which has to adopt its own domestic legislation to ensure that CITES is implemented at the national level.

Thailand is a "party" to the convention. But, has Thailand "adopt[ed] its own legislation to ensure that CITES is implemented"? That is the law to which the citizens of Thailand are bound.

Well - the temple backed down in the face of the evidence - not exactly arse-thumping stuff - the usual Thai face-safving climbdown routine

Can you expand a bit more on that statement?

I can, but i won't. Have you a specific question?

I have a non specific question

No specific answer then.

Can you give us a hint derail?

Or were intending to look clueless?

Quote: "was planning to go there with my children next month but, your right i cancelled and go to Singapore Zoo. "

I have been to Khao Kheow Open Zoo twice this year, in my opinion it's the best one I have been to in Thailand. They have tried hard to remove cages and used moats instead fences. Can rent a golf cart for wheels, I would suggest it better in your car if you have one. It is closer to Sri acha than anywhere, about 40 mins out of Pattaya on the road to Banagkok.

Here is a bit of information I found.

So what is happening doubt the temple now?

Can someone tell me please, why this post is up in the list of recent posts when it is almost 2 years old?...ahhhh.............. Cowslip is following up! (Sorry - I was just looking at the post dates and Cowslips did not appear at the top of the list)

I guess it will be like most things here - like when you see the cops on the TV arresting people and parading them in front of the TV cameras, (guilty until proven innocent or beaten to death) you never ever hear any follow up - it just seems that once you have been on Channel 3 with the BIB with a pile of Ya Ba or whatever - that is the end of it - DISAPPEAR!

(Tigers from Khao Yai do not wander over to Thung Yai Naresuan)

Thanks for pointing out the blatantly obvious Briggsy.

They take the bus of course.

a TEMPLE going to court over a COMMERCIAL / DEFAMATION dispute.

Yet another reason to never visit the place, and tell everyone you know.

[Time to add another post on TripAdvisor. Stay factual and quote sources. ]

whereas drugging of the animals if it does take place is deplorable, I think it is extremely difficult to prove and thus may be a diversion from the several possible infringements occurring at the temple which may be more physically demonstrable deviations from accepted animal care and husbandry. and also national and international laws and treaties - (e.g. C.I.T.E.S.)

there is a press release from WFFT (defendants) - check their web site.

Many annimals are druged they even use to drug the Elephants, not so much now,
