Employer's Obligations To Cover Staff Medical Expenses?

Featured Replies

Can someone fill me in on what a Thai company's (employer's) financial obligations are for looking after staff who have a medical problem or accident inside or outside of work.

I have been told that the employer (company) pays half the costs and the company insurance pays half. I have also been told that this is the case even if the employee injures themselves out of work, at home, in their own time. Can this be true? If so, surely an employer is taking on an unreasonable huge open-ended liability when employing staff.

my company's group insurance covers all emergency procedures, but its OPD then my company will reimburse me

Dont believe any company is legally obligated to provide medical coverage in the circumstances you describe. They will be obligated to carry a "workmans compenstation" type insurance which would cover work related but nothing else.

Usually things like this are negotiated at the contract stage...

I thought that was the social security that all workers must contribute to and the employers match. If this is the case they are entitled to free treatment at a nominated Private hospital and I cannot see how you have any more obligation.

The social security payment is to do with unemployment not medical treatment, and certainly not at a private hospital

gives an overview view of thescial security system.

You can also find more details from the government site.

or from the act itself

Can you give a reference to the information that it does not cover illness or is this just hot air.

strange then that all my staff have to nominate a hospital (government I believe) for treatment that will be covered under the social fund, I even nominated one myself

Social security includes hospital costs, similair to the 30 baht health sceme, as also the links provided by harry shows.

Thanks for all the info guys, especially harry,- very helpful indeed. All looks quite straight forward and shows I can disregard my previous source of (mis)information.

Cheers,
