It's Time! The Chiang Mai ToyRide Main Event 2010 is here.........

TAKE A RIDE. GIVE A TOY. BRING A SMILE. Chiang Mai ToyRide 2010: helping children in need with charity motorcycle parade, party, food, live music, games and toy giveaway!

All motorcyclists are invited to join the event whether their bikes are large or small. And there’s no admission charge: just bring along a new toy (or more than one) to warm a needy child’s heart.

• Admission/donation: one new toy and a great big smile!

There will be prizes awarded for the "Best Dressed (with toys) Motorcycle". 10 bikes of all types will be chosen at Tesco Lotus and voted on at the X-Centre by registered participants of the toy ride.

This year we are expecting 90 children, including a number of kids from the School for the Deaf.

We need not only stuffed animal toys, but sports equipment, and other toys for girls and boys.

Entertainment will be provided by our own Jonadda and a number of bands from The Guitarman.

Food will be available from Miguel's Mexican Food, Tuskers Bar, and the X-Centre (including Thai food).

These guys work really hard and I know from experience they do make a difference to some sections of the communities. Limited resources as always but with best use of those resources and huge hearts, this is a day not to be missed for sure. I strongly urge anyone able to attend, to do so.

Why not hire a bike for the day and go along too.

Chiang Mai ToyRide 2010 will start from the Tesco Lotus-Kamtieng, which is located on the Super Highway (Rte 11) just north of the city. See you there at 9:45 AM

This years route will be a 53km. ride of approximately one hour duration. It will parade through the heart of Chiang Mai and Thapae Gate. We will head south following the scenic Ping River, then circle back and enjoy the mountain view as we head North along the Canal Rd. to the party site at the X-Centre Zorb Ball site in Mae Rim.

The ride will take about an hour. We have a police escort to control the intersections, and an ambulance to follow us on the route and park at the X-Centre party just in case.

I never forget the day when I saw my teddybear for the first time, high up on a cubboard in the shopping mall. It was love on first sight. Bear was almost as big as I was. I was 4 years old. There was a small hole in the side of his head (parents happy as that meant a huge discount, but how little did I know or would have cared). So I 'took care' of my bear. I still have him, at my parent's house. My nieces were allowed to play with him, but Woh! if they would lift him up only on 1 paw. That would 'hurt' my bear.

I have a big teddymonkey that I would like to donate, hoping that I can make a child as happy as I still am with my bear. Can't join the ride, but will bring it to Tuskers.

It was a great day & there were some extremely happy kids out there.

My wife and I joined the ride this year, after somehow missing it last.

We support the cause, and think the comittee members do a wonderful job.

I have fought with myself as to whether I should mention this, but what put a dampner on the day, for us, was the fact we, and a number of others got left behind.

I have taken part in the Hahndorf Toyride in Adelaide a number of years back, and they too advertise "Open to all bikes". It was confirmed when a good few thousand bikes all rode together in a pack at a nice slow pace, kind of like a parade, to the showground where the mountain of toys was created, and the kids and adults alike partied too.

My only criticism, and Im willing to get involved, so please dont flame me.... is that the ride itself seemed more like a big bike ride, with the scooters floundering at the back, and not getting the support of the police traffic stops, and turning to each other for directions. If the bike riders were a pack of like minded nice folk doing something good for charity, why didn't they stick together? I was doing 60 - 70 kmph with a small New scooter, and ultimately, ended up loosing the big boys.

I just feel, that big bike rides out are for one day. And a toyride should be about riding together, buffalo pack style (Whereby the pack moves as fast as its slowest member), for the public to see, and create awareness.

Once again, its not a complaint. Its merely a comment about why we felt a little left out.

We are happy we gave a number of big toys to the kids, and we applaud the organisers. I just thought I should try and be honest with this CONSTRUCTIVE criticism.

Overall a great day out.

Thanks for joining in on the toy ride & the constructive criticism.

I'm glad you enjoyed yourself, but sorry that you felt a bit left out with the ride.

One of the problems we have is setting a nice pace that is comfortable for all, and this is not exactly easy with such a variety of bikes.

The pace however is set by the traffic police who like to control things their way.

Riding at the front the pace was too slow for the bigger sport bikes & they were overheating until the run down the canal road.

According to my GPS track for the ride, the average moving speed was 16KPH, with a maximum of 79 KPH on the canal road; although a few riders on big bikes went faster for a few hundred metres to cool their engines down.

So it looks like the problem might be you guys at the back, getting caught at the intersections & hurrying to catch up? However I did not think this was happening with the 5 police bikes riding escort & supposedly marshalling everyone along “at the right pace”. Next year we will endeavour to rectify the problem for you & the riders on smaller bikes, as we want everyone to join in & be happy, no matter what sort of bike.
