I don't know if it's worth replying to this thread, but will confirm Astral's post:  the porn, disgusting as it is if the models are REALLY as young as they say (and how did they know the ages? they were printed on the photos, perchance? or by "looking?") is just a smear, unless they can somehow demonstrate HE produced it from live models- possession is not illegal.

These initial news reports are often sensationalistic and, basically, false.  Notice how "11" and "17" year olds show up both in the age of the photos AND in the ages of the boys "he had just slept with."  Lack of creativity there, I think (or a signal for the astute reader to notice holes in the story).  I'll buy a beer for all the kneejerk posters before this post on this thread IF this guy REALLY gets OFFICIALLY charged on the record with a sex crime against an 11-year-old.

I figure someone's got it in for him, reported him knowing he had porn, and now the police are on a fishing expedition.  It happens so often that these investigations fall apart- why does anyone trust them now?

The less long-shot part of the story- that he might've slept with a 17 year old, which in Thailand is apparently legal- is more believable- sadly for the police, not prosecutable.

And as Moog points out, the Thais are much, much more abusive and suspect in this regard.

The report says he was just finishing with a 15 and 17 year old... those ages easily obtained by direct questioning of them. The photos were of children BETWEEN 11 and 17 years old (btw, not exactly what I would call "models"). Those ages could have been obtained by questioning the perp or gleaned from his journal entries. If he's like many child abusers, he keeps highly detailed notes of his trysts with children.

After abusing 500 children over a 6 year period of time, it's likely that he's got MANY people who have it for him.

As for a fishing expedition, child abusers are often their own worst enemy keeping such records with photos included. Makes the job of the police very easy.

If the photo below is any indication, he definitely appears to be fearful that he will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and rightfully so...

According to 'The Daily News', he belonged to some internet club called 'Men love Boys', (is the great champion of black causes, Mr Michael Jackson, a long standing member?), and had been posting photos of himself with his conquests in various parts of Asia for a few years to fellow members (literally). The Yanks got hold of it a while back and finally traced him to Thailand and conducted a joint raid with the Thai authorities.

He used to work with me at a International(American)English Language School on Ramkhamhaeng, for about 6 months.

He was a weirdo and the other teachers had their suspicions. We knew he was gay.

All I remember was that he was off sick a lot with depression, so he said. I thought he may have been an alkie. He never used to socialise with us, or maybe we didn't let him.

From what I remember, he was a friendly kind of guy who one couldn't help feeling sorry for.

I think he was, in fact, a real qualified teacher.

Did he in fact break the law?

Taking photographs of 15 year old boys, if they consented, is legal, I think?

I ain't going to judge him.

If he ends up in the Hilton, he ain't going to last very long.

Then indeed a lot will be made of this and his case will likely not be swept under the rug. They wouldn't go to all that trouble if they weren't serious about prosecuting. The Americans might even be the ones to do that. It's a 20 year federal prison sentence to abuse children overseas.

Appalling though it may be, in Thailand:

1. The possession of porn is not a crime, only if it is for sale.

2. The age of consent is 15, unless payment(ie prostitution) is involved.

As for the timeline, people come and leave Thailand all the time. He may have just been here the latest time for six years.

Although the report did say 500 photographs and I said 500 children... which may or may not be wrong as the report didn't specify. Irregardless, if it was even just one 11 year old... let him be prosecuted to the upmost.

As more details are revealed, things are looking rather grim for Mr. Prowler:

Two boys, aged 15 and 16, were in his room when the place was raided about 4am, police said.

Yup.. There's still the law. That said, he's from America and there sex with 15/16 year olds is very much an offense.. So chances are he will be deported and arrested there.

And sex with 'minors' (i.e. below the age-limit) is in many states statiotory (*sp*) rape per automatic. So he could in theory be from a state where his actions are legal (well, not the under-15-kids, taking pictures or paying them for sex...but the actuall act of sex with an 15 or 17-year-old then) but the goverment working on the case might be located in a state where it is not... any americans can probably fill in the blanks here.

Hopefully, we can put this state by state confusion to rest once and for all. He is violating FEDERAL law and faces a 20 year FEDERAL sentence in a FEDERAL prison (no parole, btw in federal prisons). It matters not whether he is from Maine, Florida, Alaska, or California. There is ONE law in this case... and it's a federal case.

At the core, this case sounds similar to the Michael Jackson case. If MJ is found not guilty, I am afraid it is going to set a nighmarish precedent as to finding this to be a crime, at least against Americans.
