Ovens.

Featured Replies

I live in a rented place, with limited cooking facilities. I have seen in Makro and I think BigC ovens on sale for about 2/3,000. Has anyone any experience of using them? (I don't mean the little 'toaster' ovens, but the more substantial things, which I must admit do look like a double toaster with an element on the top and bottom!)

Ideally I would like to do some home cooking, a roast maybe, even a little home baking, but if I am really honest I am desperate for Yorkshire Puddings! :) Sad I know, but if anyone has used one of these things, I would really appreciate your comments.

Thank you. :D

I had one of those silly toaster oven things for quite a few years. They are ok for toasted sandwiches or just simple toast but that is about it.

Last year I decided to get rid of it and go for more of an oven type thing. Went to Tesco and got an Otto Toaster Oven. Not a simple toaster but a small oven with temp. control from 100 to 250C and thermostat, 4 stage selector(off, bottom heat element, top element with fan forced, or top and bottom with fan forced. Timer for 60min, 3 tray with levels and rotisserie. 18 ltr capacity.

Never bothered with the rotisserie but the oven itself is fantastic. Cost me something like 2,500B and I use it at least 3 or 4 times a week. Roast chicken, half roast leg of lamb, roast pork with all the spuds, pumpkin etc. Grilled chops, casseroles etc, have done them all and great. Definitely worth the few baht it cost.

Don't need a proper oven that will cost you 20k or so, for what unless you are feeding an army or huge family.

I admit you will probably need to check on your roasts etc more often than with an expensive oven but I can handle that as I am sure most can. Oh and the one I got has a v nice stainless steel look to it.

I'm drooling as I type this! Thank you SilentReader. :)

Otto is the make of the one I saw, thanks for reminding me.

Of course the proof of the pudding as they say, will be in the Yorkshire Pudding Test! :D

Have one, bought at BigC.

Works fine, except plug it out before you touch it.

After some spare ribs, touching a metal piece is a big no no.

Got chocked twice. :)

I believe i've seen stoves/ovens at homepro.I believe some of them were name brand. If your not baking then i'd go with A small toaster oven. But if your going to be doing regular baking thewn ya will definitely need one.

Hi Itissohothere,

I cook three to four times a week at home and would not dream of being without ample oven space. I have two ovens, a small Otto, as has already been described, for everyday roast potatoes, garlic bread, etc.

However, if you want to go the whole hog; i.e., a substantial spit roast with all the trimmings, I would strongly recommend the large DeLonghi free-standing oven. These are available at most major stores, such as Central, and will cost between 9,000 and 12,000 baht depending on the model.

Happy cooking,

GeorgeO

But we don't have a 'Central' in Samui!!

Take a look at the Otto super turbo convection oven, this is a fan forced smallish glass cooker that we find fits the bill perfectly. It has a temp' control and timer control, always cooks perfectly and evenly due to being fan forced. And only about 2,000 Baht or thereabouts.

I got a small oven grill with a griddle type hot plate on top from Tesco for 1400 baht. It can easily handle a roast joint and roast potatoes and I just steam the other veg in the rice cooker. 1 Sunday dinner no problem. My only bug bear is the on / off is by a timer with only 90 minutes a time. I keep meaning to swap it for a switch.

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions everyone. :D

I trundled off to town today with 3,000 baht in my sticky mitts. Tesco, Makro, BigC and HomePro don't have the Otto oven in stock! :D And of course, none of the 'assistants' had a clue what I was talking about. :)

My friend is taking his BIG car down to Hat Yai at the weekend. I may just thumb a lift! :D
