The_Other_Mac Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 Sounds exactly the same location, depth and strength as the last scare. I imagine Phuket coast is being evacuated at this moment, if not, book early to avoid the rush. Anyone higher up hear sirens?
Explorer Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 the news was on CNN tv but not on the CNN site at this time. but no other details from the CNN tv except saying, "no tsunami is to be expected at this moment". Explorer
baht&sold Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 news/EARTHQUAKE Powerful earthquake rocks Sumatra Posted 14 May 2005 @ 09:10 JAKARTA, 14 May 2005 - Indonesia - A magnitude 6.9 undersea earthquake rocked Indonesia’s Sumatra island on Saturday, triggering panic across a large swathe of the region. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said it was unlikely that the quake would trigger a tsunami. The temblor was centered 31 miles southwest of the city of Padang on west Sumatra. Frightened residents ran from their shaking houses in several cities on the island, said Budi Waluyo, a spokesman for the agency. Temblors have been a daily occurrence in the region since a monster 9.1 magnitude earthquake struck the region on Dec. 26 and triggered a tsunami, killing as many as 180,000 people in Indonesia and 10 others countries across the Indian Ocean. The_Other_Mac Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 From the BBChttp://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4546599.stm <{POST_SNAPBACK}> From the above: "There is no tsunami due to the quake because it was a deep one under the sea," Reuters news agency quoted [Japanese] seismologist Rinto Nadjiono from the quake centre in the capital Jakarta as saying. Funny, I thought that deep ones were more dangerous. Still, I'm not a seismologist and he is.
peter991 Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 More on my post here and the first POST Tsunami Warning issued here Peter
