"million Man March"? - Advice

Hey all,

I am booked to fly back to the US out of BKK on the 13th of March...right smack dab in the middle of this supposed "million man march". I realize that speculation will probably not really get me anywhere, but I must ask; If it were YOU, would you be concerned about trying to fly out of Bankok on this date?

(PS - I posted this on the Chiang Mai forum because I'm living in Chiang Mai, and tend to think that maybe the contributors for Chiang Mai are more intellegent than those from Bangkok :) Ha, ha )

I too am flying around that time and have made contingency plans in the event that things end up like the PAD protest at the airport, which I dont think it will but better safe than sorry. I was travelling via Bangkok Airport in the middle of that fiasco and dont want to go through a repeat of it.

And don't worry your not paranoid. Some people need to live in isolated 3rd world rural communities because they have little or no social skills and then they find themselves craving attention and so post inflammatory posts on internet forum sites. Just put em on ignore and thank your lucky stars you don't have to actually socialise with them in real life.

Ah yes, "3rd world rural communities" who's being inflammatory now? :)

JennyLee,

If it were me and changing dates was not practical (I would think about that first), here is how I would approach it:

1. I would guess that if flying from CNX and transiting BKK same day, the flight to BKK will be canceled if there is a problem at/on the airport itself. I could go home, crying maybe, but still go home and be comfortable.

2. If I were planning on being in BKK and then leaving from there on the 13th, I would worry that even if the airport proper is not affected, roads leading in may be. So I would make a reservation for the night of the 12th at the on site Novetel. I would show up at, say, noon on the 12th, relax, and then on the 13th simply walk over and check in.

That is what I would consider doing. If you can't reschedule, there are not very many work arounds possible.

To answer the question directly, if it was me I would not be worried about this. If, presumably, you're clearing immigration in Chiang Mai, you'll already be on your way by the time you get to BKK. In the unlikely event anything is happening that would affect your travel, you'd know it here.

You've probably already considered Silkair to Singapore and onward or one of the other alternatives. That was my back-up during the late unpleasantness at the BKK airport.

I'm as security-conscious as most people, I suppose, and am transiting BKK around the same time. I am personally more concerned about the weather in the States.

I am flying through Bangkok that time and am not concerned. One of the Red's key points is the failure of the police/army to follow orders and act against the airport seizure, and then the failure on the part of the prosecution/judiciary to prosecute the people responsible. Trying exactly the same would make them lose those key claims so it's not going to happen. Possible traffic disruptions in downtown Bangkok are quite possible of course, but wouldn't affect people just transiting at Suvarnabhumi.

"PARANOID. Their coming to get me. The sky is falling. Leave now. "

The sky is falling? Oh dear. You know whose fault I bet this is? Those dang redshirts...that or global warming

But seriously folks - thank you for all your input. Much appreciated :)
