Got Canadian Visa, Now What?

Featured Replies

Girlfriend just got her visa after dropping her papers yesterday. Now what?

It doesn't say how long she can stay, we only requested 1 month but if we can stay longer, we will.

How do i know how long she can stay? She says they will tell us when we get to Canada, but that doesn't make sense to me.

Im not even sure its possible to buy roundtrip trickets on orbitz where you can change the return date for a non-exorbitant fee

I am assuming its a visitor visa. You will get a 6 month stamp upon arrival.

You won't after you get the bill. :)

the Visa will have a good until date. That is how long you will be able to stay until.

Gf assures me that on the visa it only says that she has to leave thailand to canada between today and the next 90days.

So therefore its automatically 6months at the Canadian border?

As I said before, it is standard to get a 6 month stamp on arrival. However, and this is important, your GF must tell the immigration officer the length of stay to be the same as on her application. She can still be refused entry, but this is rare. So if she put a 1 month stay on her application, then that is what she tells the immigration officer. Consistency is the key here. Don't raise any red flags.

Alright thanks, hopefully they dont just put 1 month.. would be a waste of a 3month return ticket

not correct, the visa expired date is when the visa expires, you must enter canada before that date, on the last day if you wish, you get 6 months stay from date of entry, been there done that.

did they ask you to see your return ticket or date?

Yes, and a lot of other questions, they are able to refuse entry , a visa just gets you into the country, they can send you packing, but if you qualified for a visa you should be fine. They ask for a return ticket, itinerary, a lot of questions, looking for something I suppose.

As long as you take her out of the country before the 6 months are up no worries, I have changed dates from what we told the embassy, and the border people, many times due to plans changing, no big deal, just rememebr the 6months.

ok so i should definitely buy a return ticket for the next month and just change it asap to 3-6months later after im in

My husband (Thai) has never been asked for return tickets at the point of entry (vancouver) to Canada (entered on a TRV 4 times). That has been our experience, but Im sure for many people they ask lots of questions and look for return tickets. Definitely our first time they asked more questions, after that they hardly asked any. If the officer stamps your passport without writing a date then you are able to stay up to six months. If the officer stamps a date, you must return by this date. As said above, the expiry date on the visa itself just means you have to enter Canada by this time.
