It was the last released Pink Floyd album under the "leadership" of Roger Waters, but to me it is too RW, and not PF enough.

"The Final Cut" is often regarded as a Roger Waters solo album masquerading as a Pink Floyd album. When placed in comparison with Roger's bona fide solo albums that came later, I can't agree, as this album possesses a poignancy, depth, clarity, and beauty that his solo works don't even come close to touching. My hunch is that even though David Gilmour's musical input on "The Final Cut" is minimal, his presence alone was enough to temper Roger's excesses to a certain extent, reining Roger in from the pretentious ramblings that would diminish his solo work.

There are really two Pink Floyds: the relatively inane Pink Floyd that gets played on the radio incessantly, and the more artistically deep Pink Floyd, which gets ignored by all but the hardcore fans. "The Final Cut" falls into this latter camp and is truly an overlooked gem in the Floyd catalog. This album says everything Roger said on "The Wall" in half the space, and with twice the poignancy and substance. Roger's lyrics here are miles beyond the juvenile self-pity of those on "The Wall" but retain all the blunt cynicism necessary to drive his point home. (Roger ceased to be a poet in the early '70s; poetry is subtle, and there's nothing subtle about the biting narrative style that would emerge as his trademark.) I do think that sometimes he goes too far even here in places--I find his suggestion of gassing world leaders, Nazi-style, in "The Fletcher Memorial Home" ("now the final solution can be applied") to be in poor taste, and it makes me wonder to what degree those fascist-like ramblings on "The Wall" were parody and to what degree a perhaps subconscious affinity. Further, "Not Now John" is both unnecessarily vulgar and disturbingly jingoistic, and the opening song's lines about the "Nips" and their kids committing hari-kari can be taken as xenophobic at best, racist at worst.

All that aside, though, the greater message of the devastating effects of war shines through brilliantly, helped along immensely by a sparse but beautiful score. Roger's plaintive lyrics receive wonderful complement from the gentle piano, wailing sax, lush orchestrations, and of course Dave's gorgeous, weeping guitar solos, which on the whole evoke more emotion than his best work on "The Wall." In fact, even despite his small role here, this was Dave's best guitar work since "Animals." Even Nick Mason's drumming is powerful here in its sparse and unique setting, being used not so much to keep time as to provide emphatic individual and calculatedy placed flourishes, coming across like well-placed shotgun blasts to rouse the listener to attention.

This being a Floyd album, the SFX play an important role as well--you MUST play "Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert" with headphones, so that you can have the full effect of having the missile blow off your head.

Musically, "The Final Cut" mixes beauty and sadness in a way no other album has ever done. "The Gunner's Dream" and the title cut are sonically gorgeous pieces, juxtaposed with some of Roger's most achingly sad lyrics of his career. (The lyrical reference on the title track to "If," Roger's old "Atom Heart Mother" song, is a nice touch.) The closing piece isn't quite as sad, but it's the most disarming song on the album, with its soft, pleasant musical tapestry completely belying the subject matter: nuclear annihilation. (The second sun in "Two Suns in the Sunset" is, of course, a mushroom cloud.)

The only song that doesn't really fit in is "Not Now John." While it's nice to hear Dave actually get to sing a little bit, this piece (aside from its distasteful lyrics) conjures up bad images of the worst moments of "The Wall"--i.e., the brainless testosterone rock of "Young Lust." But other than that misstep, this album is light years ahead of "The Wall." "The Final Cut" is not passive background or car-radio music.

You might call it the thinking man's version of "The Wall." And you would be correct.

Mayhap, when I go back to work in a minute and put it on, I shall now have a new appreciation for it.

They just announced on the Beeb yesterday that the original Floyd band is going to play the Live8. That'll be a hard ticket to get.

I once played it at a party and it completely killed the atmosphere stone dead and the party never recovered - I wasn't invited to any more.

Anyway, I had split up with Karen and wasn't having a very good time so I didn't see why anyone else should.

already posted my "downer songs" but reading through other posts, as so often does, has inspired me to add to it...

The Wonder Boys Soundtrack album.

It includes Leonard Cohens "Waiting for a miracle"

The incredible Neil Young with Linda Rondtsad (sic?) and James Taylor, singing "Old Man, take a look at my life, I´m a lot like you were..."

And four tracks by Bob Dylan, including a little heard,

Pink Floyd reform for Live 8 show

Roger Waters left Pink Floyd in the mid-1980s to pursue a solo career

Rock band Pink Floyd's classic line-up will be reunited on stage for the first time in 24 years at next month's Live 8 concert in London.

Roger Waters will join band members Dave Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright for the show in Hyde Park.

Waters last performed on stage with them at London's Earls Court in 1981.

The Live 8 concert, organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to help fight African poverty, is one of five taking place around the world on 2 July.

Pink Floyd join a star-studded line-up at Hyde Park which includes Madonna, REM, U2, Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John, Coldplay and Robbie Williams.

"Like most people I want to do everything I can to persuade the G8 leaders to make huge commitments to the relief of poverty and increased aid to the third world," said Pink Floyd's Dave Gilmour.

"Any squabbles Roger and the band have had in the past are so petty in this context, and if reforming for this concert will help focus attention then it's got to be worthwhile," he added.

Legendary

Pink Floyd are viewed as being one of the biggest rock bands of all time.

The group released their first record in 1967, with founding member Syd Barrett on lead guitar, alongside Waters, Mason and Wright.

At the beginning of 1968, guitarist Dave Gilmour - a friend of the band - was brought in as a fifth member. Barrett left the group shortly afterwards.

The remaining four members achieved legendary status with albums such as 1973's The Dark Side Of The Moon, which stayed in the US album chart for more than a decade.

Fans have long yearned for a reunion of the classic Pink Floyd line-up of Waters, Gilmour, Mason and Wright, but it seemed unlikely because of a fall-out between founder member Waters and the rest of the group in the mid-1980s.

Gilmour, Mason and Wright continued to record and tour as Pink Floyd during the remainder of the 80s and into the 90s, releasing their last studio album - The Division Bell - in 1994
