Donations needed for baby elephant

By The Nation

CHUMPHON: -- Donations are being solicited from the public to buy powdered milk for the two-week-old elephant named Plai Huai Yai that nearly drowned in a waterfall pool at Namtok Ngao National Park on Sunday.

The calf is under close observation by veterinarian Pichai Phokasang at the Eighth Territorial Defence Volunteers Administration Command in Phato district.

Pichai said the calf's general condition was improving after falling in the pool but that she still suffered bouts of diarrhoea.

Plai Huai Yai was being fed a saline solution and milk and cooled by a fan, while visitors were warned not to touch her for fear she might contract a disease.

Park chief Chaiyasan Hiransalee said the calf might be returned to the jungle to look for its mother when fully recovered.

Elephant veterinarian Pattarapon Maneeon will later treat her under instructions from Jatuporn Burutpat, director-general of the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department, Chaiyasan said.

Chumphon Governor Karan Supakijwilekkarn said Plai Huai Yai needed at least Bt1,000 per day to cover expenses and that many people had called to ask about her condition and offer to donate money.

He opened an account at the Carrefour Chumphon branch of Siam Commercial Bank, number 401-782-4669 under the name Plai Huai Yai, to take contributions.

The elephant being the national animal/symbol for Thailand, I am sure that all Thais will rush to donate and it wont be left to the kind hearted expats to save this poor animal.

For those who dont have the money to donate right at this moment, if you wait 6 months you will be able to donate directly and see the progress of Plai Huai Yai as she is dragged around the streets of bangkok as a tourist attraction!!!!

Funds pouring in for injured baby elephant

By The Nation

CHUMPON: -- The condition of the two-week-old elephant calf, that nearly drowned in a waterfall pool at Namtok Ngao National Park on Sunday, has improved as donations to provide it with powdered milk has reached Bt200,000, veterinarian Pattarapon Maneeon said yesterday.

Though Plai Huai Yai can walk, it still sustained some wounds that are being treated with antibiotics.

The calf has also been moved to the more spacious National Park Protection Unit 2. Today officials will try to track down the herd Plai Huay Yai belonged to so the calf can be reunited with its mother.

Chumphon Governor Karan Supakijwilekkarn said donations made to the Phai Huai Yai bank account, number 401-782-4669, at the Carrefour Chumphon branch of Siam Commercial Bank had reached Bt227,963 as of Tuesday.

Rescued baby elephant dies

By The Nation

CHUMPHON

CHUMPHON: -- A baby elephant rescued from a waterfall pool at Namtok Ngao National Park on March 14 died on Sunday night from acute gastroenteritis, a vet that treated the animal said yesterday.

Plai Huai Yai was treated for exhaustion and bacterial blood infection, but went into shock on Sunday night and its heart stopped.

It was pronounced dead at 10pm from acute gastro-enteritis, possibly from being in water for two days before being rescued.

Patho district chief Prachin Thansirisin, who presided over the elephant burial ritual in the national park yesterday, said the Bt50,000 remaining from public donations to buy powdered milk for Plai Huai Yai would be used to fund wildlife watch operations in watershed forestland where elephants often die from falls.
