SWINDLED: Kathu District Chief Siriphat Phathakul

PATONG, PHUKET: -- A transsexual supermarket cashier was arrested in Phuket for stealing the chief of Kathu District’s credit card and using it to buy a notebook computer.

Sarayut Yunu, a 24-year-old employee at a well known Patong supermarket, failed to return Kathu District Chief Siriphat Phathakul’s card after a transaction on March 12.

After Mr Siriphat left the store, Pattani ladyboy Mr Sarayut passed the KTC Bank card to a friend, 18-year-old resort worker Sarina Doloh.

Miss Sarina used it to buy a 15,990-baht notebook at the store’s electronics counter.

Unaware of what was happening, Mr Siriphat headed to Thalang to rehearse for his role as a Burmese prince in last week’s Thalang Light and Sound battle reenactments.

KTC Bank called Mr Siriphat to check if he had made the purchase around 8:40pm.

“Then I remembered the cashier hadn’t returned my card that day,” he said.

Mr Siriphat immediately called the superintendent of Kathu Police, Col Arayapan Pukbuakao, who sent officers to the store to investigate.

At the store they found the notebook transaction receipt with Mr Siriphat’s card number on it. The slip had been signed with the name “Mali”.

Officers questioned Mr Sarayut, who denied any involvement, telling the police Miss Sarina was responsible.

The officers took Mr Sarayut to the resort where his younger friend worked.

As soon as the group arrived, the resort security guard presented Mr Sarayut with the notebook computer, saying Miss Sarina had left it for him.

At this point, Mr Sarayut confessed all.

Mr Sarayut and Miss Sarina have been charged with conspiring to use another person’s bank card without permission.

Mr Siriphat said, “I want cashiers to be more careful with credit cards. The cashier [at the electronics counter] didn’t check the signature.”

Col Arayapan worried about the effect the scam could have had on tourism. “If this happened to a tourist and they went home, what could we do?” he said.

A few months ago a ladyboy stole an influencial farang's business credit card from a backpack of a farang employee in Patong who was using it to make authorized purchases. The ladyboy and his ladyboy friends then went around to several gold shops until one took the card and purchased hundreds of thousands of baht in gold. The police caught the ladayboys using security camera footage. The ladyboys returned the card and the money, and then the farang was told that any charges were impossible because the money was returned. :) Huh ?

I have heard similar (with a farang involved) where a large amount was stolen and because it was (mostly) returned the police claimed there was nothing to prosecute.. It was basically a heads I win tails I dont lose.. If I get caught I just give it back and no problems.

In fact wasnt that exactly what happened with the bus company that gassed or drugged the people, robbed their bags and got caught ?? They gave the stuff back (mostly) and the police then didnt prosecute.
