Thailand To Introduce E-passports In June

Thailand to introduce E-passports

BANGKOK: -- Thailand plans to introduce E-passports for its nationals to prevent counterfeiting of Thai travel documents.

The E-passport service has been tested and will be provided to diplomats and government officials on Thursday, according to the Deputy Foreign Minister, Preecha Laohapongchana.

''We believe E-passports can prevent passport counterfeiting because the government has collected all the biographical data on each individual holder,'' he said.

E-passports will be distributed to the general public from the beginning of next month.

''This system will benefit all Thai travellers when they visit countries where E-passports are used, particularly in the US and in some European countries,'' he said.

The deputy foreign minister said the new system would also improve Thailand's ability to serve foreign tourists with E-passports.
