Female inmates face shortage of underwear

BANGKOK: -- Female inmates of Thailand’s prison are facing a desperate shortage of underwear, which the Bureau of the Budget apparently regards as a ‘luxury item’, the director of the Central Women’s Prison, Ankhanueng Lebnak, revealed today.

So desperate has their plight become that Mrs. Ankhanueng has been forced to urge the public to donate underwear for the inmates.

The prison service is even accepting used underwear, and has to date collected 74,010 items, thanks to the public appeal.

Today Mrs. Ankhanueng, who oversaw the launch of a ‘caravan’ taking underwears to female prisoners across the country, said that the prison service received funding to purchase only 10 sanitary napkins for each female prisoner each month, and only two pairs of underwear each year.

Noting that underwear was a bare necessity, Mrs. Ankhanueng said that the Department of Corrections would attempt to get more government funding this year.

Previous attempts to get higher amounts of money, however, have been met with the riposte that underwear is a ‘luxury item’.

JUSTICE:

No money for underwear

BANGKOK: -- Budget shortfalls at prisons nationwide have forced some female prisoners to go without underwear, said a senior corrections official yesterday.

Ung-kanung Lepnak, director of Central Women Correctional Institution, said each inmate, male or female, normally receives two pieces of underwear a year. Women receive an additional 10 sanitary napkins, but no brassieres are provided.

``Normally women inmates prepare their personal items before they arrive at prison and their relatives buy bras and panties for them when needed,'' she said.

But relatives often stop visiting, and stop bringing supplies, after inmates have been in jail longer than five years.

The Corrections Department along with Channel 3 television and the Mall Group yesterday launched a truck caravan to distribute bras and panties to women inmates around the country. The campaign has received thousands of bras and panties, as well as other consumer products, worth 100,000 baht in the past several months. ``Prisoners, especially in the Northeast, who have no relatives or have been in jail for more than five years will be the first to get the items,'' said Ms Ung-kanung.

Currently, there are more than 29,000 women prisoners in jails nationwide, including 300 foreigners in the Central Women Correctional Institution. There are about 74,000 donated bras and pairs of panties, 60% which are new, so the inmates will receive about two items each.

Why are all the "google sponsored links" at the top of this page for mens underwear, is it just chance ! :o

Very interesting because I am getting different adverts.

Also when I type in ThaiVisa I get google adverts that involve libelous statements against TV but other people don't get it.

Sorry off topic but George may be interested.

Must be slow today George.

I get the google ads.

After donating lots of clothes to Phuket after the Tsunami,to find out that Thais could only recieve clothes after they produced their ID cards, which were obvoiusly lost. I assume there must be a warehouse full of non distributed garments.

You should Post Addresses and Contact info for Stories like this, just in case someone out there wanted to Help. You never know how many people are Reading this from Outside Thailand, and could afford to send them something to help out.

Just a thought,..
