To India Without A Lot Of Rupees?

Featured Replies

I was recently checking out fares to India and found them quite high, comparable to a flight to Europe.

You can prettily easily fly to Singapore for 100 dollars but India seems to cost 650 plus. I know it is further, but not by that much.

So, are there any discount carriers or ethnic bucket shops for tickets to India?

If I remember rightly I flew to Bangkok from Calcutta for about 100 dollars a few years back, 650 is well over the top.

any ticket to india on TG/CX/SQ going to be costly. Use Indian Airlies $200 to most cities or Book for Air India code sharing TG which comes to $200-$250. Never book via internet if you go for Indian Airlines.

As far as that goes, you may find that a domestic Delhi-Mumbai or Delhi-Trivandrum return air ticket to be as expensive as a Bangkok-India return ticket! The Indian government is starting to ease up regarding restrictions on air traffic, adopting open-skies policies in many areas. Expect ticket prices to change dramatically within the next couple years, both for internal and for external flights. Budget airlines like Air Deccan are already starting to appear for domestic travel.

I think Bhutan Airlines have daily flights to Calcutta - about $100 last time I went, but that was in the other direction.

That is well over the top.

Olavi quotes from www.olavi.com (who are on Khao San Road and one of the better travel agents in BKK)

BKK - CAL RTN = 10,000 THB (approx 240 USD)

BKK - DEL RTN = 13,800 THB (approx 320 USD)

BKK - BOM RTN = 14,800 THB (approx 360 USD)

My advice (if time allows) would be to go to Calcutta (which is connected to virtually every main station in India) and take a train from there to your final destination especially if your purpose is tourism. Long distance train rides in India are comfortable in 2AC class and a special experience. Some of my enduring memories of travelling anywhere are of time on the rails in India.........
