The provincial governor here yesterday ordered police to find and take action against the person who told five semi-naked young women to dance round a haunted tree.

Nakhon Pathom Governor Nawin Khanhiran said he had instructed the Kamphaeng Saen district chief to ask police to investigate.

Nawin said dancing half-naked was obscene, so the person who organised it should be punished as well.

Kamphaeng Saen district chief Thanisorn Noipeng said local people were angry about the dance - which was shown on the front page of a mass-circulation daily on Wednesday - because they respect the takian tree, believing it to be haunted by a sacred spirit.

"People here believe that the dance was arranged by one individual. We are waiting for the police to solve the case," the district chief said.

The five girls from Bangkok were fined Bt500 each for obscene conduct.

Lt-Colonel Thongchart Rodklongton, deputy commander of Kamphaeng Saen police station, said that although the five girls had been punished, the investigation to find the instigator would continue.

Rungroj Kittithavorn, kamnan of tambon Srasimoom, said villagers told him that a reporter had tried to get the girls to dance without any music. But the reporter then played a tape on his car stereo for the girls to dance to.

Phra Khru Winaithorn Jittipong, an assistant abbot at Phai Lom Temple, yesterday had the tree replanted inside the temple compound.

The monk said many people paid respect to the spirit of the tree, so he had replanted it to prevent any more improper activities.

A dastardly deed indeed.

why did you bring back this old thread?

They could have saved 500 baht if the old Thai Doc had told them about the benefits of intercourse and masterbation. Wonder how many of the offended viewers had their eyes covered with their hands but spread their fingers enough to sneak a good peek anyway?

I trust that since the tree was replanted inside the temple that all the monks have behaved themselves and none have been disrobed :o
