Troops, police withdrawn from Ratchaprasong

gallery_327_1086_13372.jpg

BANGKOK, 6 April 2010 (NNT) – The situation at Ratchaprasong Intersection has eased up after the security forces of police and military officers have retreated from the area to avoid confrontation with supporters of the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD).

UDD Secretary-General Nattawut Saikua calmed his supporters down after an intense confrontation between the security forces and UDD protestors. He then negotiated with the police and the troops to withdraw from the place.

Security forces and their equipment were then removed from the area after they were ordered to surround the UDD in the morning. The situation eased up while UDD core leaders then told their supporters to hold their grounds.

The anti-government protestors are currently headed towards Silom road, to show their retaliation against the government after they have been prohibited from rallying on 11 roads which are business areas.

Mr Jatuporn also threatened that UDD supporters would close the National Broadcasting Services of Thailand (NBT) television station if the authorities close their People Channel.

Grenade injures two at Thai premier's party HQ: spokesman

BANGKOK (AFP) -- A grenade exploded Tuesday outside the party headquarters of Thailand's embattled prime minister, injuring two policemen, officials said, as mass anti-government protests paralysed central Bangkok.

"The grenade was fired and landed in the parking lot behind the party headquarters, wounding two policemen," said Democrat party spokesman Satit Pitutacha.

Satit said the men were not seriously hurt and had been taken to a local hospital for treatment. Another party spokesman said shrapnel had hit one of the men in the chest.

Politicians had gathered at the base near the finance ministry to mark the party's 64th anniversary, but Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva was not present because he is based at an army barracks during the protests, said Satit.
