I don't understand why people would buy GPS units from Tesco Lotus or other large stores who offer absolutely no support or service. Eagle GPS and Gadgetrend both offer excellent support and service and the prices are the same as the discount stores.

Because I was SUCKERED. It was a Songkran Special ending tomorrow and I was to busy to research other sources. I just called in on the store as I was passing while showing a visitor / "Tourist friend" around.

And I expect Gadgetrend would have set it up for me as well - Met the guy at Pattaya City Expats club and he was most helpful. I should not have used a "Box Shifter", as we call them in the UK ("Here is your sealed box, sir. Goodbye")

I bought my LG HDD-RVD recorder a few years ago on a "week-end special". The price DID go back up afterwards, and is still working perfectly. Also when I bought a large screen LCD TV. Big C delivered it, set iy up and fine turned and connected to all my other equipment, so not all bad in Supermarkets

And why would you expect Tesco Lotus to have an English map version in stock, sealed box and all?

I asked the Salesman and he confirmed English maps were included. As the box is sealed by GARMIN, an English guide to set-up ON THE CD, which includes the ENGLISH MAP, would be wise. Costs no more. I do not blame Tesco, as they only sell with what they are supplied.

As an 'InterestedObserver', I would have thought you would realise that FOREIGNERS are the normal customers in such stores, and as most cannot read Thai road directions, may purchase in a place where they normally shop. But maybe you are not that observant.

To those who have been helpful, THANKS, as the unit is now set up with English maps.

One point to notice. Having installed the English Map, it first shows a US map. Then you have to stand outside in a clear area, to let the initial Satellite acquisition take place, which does take several minutes (and the neighbours DO stare at you, as you stand there with the unit with your outstretched hand holding the Garmin :) )

And that is precisely why you should have purchased from a dealer like Eagle GPS or Gadgetrend, both have informed salespeople that would have ensured that you had an English map installed. You, after all, talked with the Gadgetrend guy at Pattaya City Expat Club and then bought the GPS from Tesco Lotus. Gadgetrend also has instructions on their website for changing the maps.

Carrefour now selling for 3900, none in stock. Tesco one is easy enough to load English street names providing you have usb link which does not come in box. copy and paste from CD. still prefer i go 8 map though

I have only worked with Maurice at Eagle GPS in Chaing Mai. I live in Udon ship the unit to him and he ships it back everything done. just installed the new version no complaints

Improvements to the basic map may be of use to you with TSM v10.1, but if junction view/lane assist does not work now then v10.1 will not fix that. Depends on the price you are willing to pay for minor changes to the map.

thanks Interested Observer ! for imported Garmin device, the TSM v10.1 provides map data update only.

junction view and lane assistance are very handy, especially new driver in Bangkok ! I may consider a lower priced Nuvi 215W for these features :-(

on the other hand, the Nuvi 765's 'speak street name' helps me a lot on remembering direction ! kind of get used to it !

I have just completed a return trip (Udon - Cha Am) which took me through on complex routes through parts of Bangkok 3 times.

Without the aid of my nuvi 260 + Thailand maps (TSM 10.1 and SE Asia 4.5) I would have been completely stuffed.

As it turned out, the directions given were faultless, making the trips (aside from the bl00dy traffic) very easy.

I have now renamed my nuvi as Mia Noi :)

does anybody know how to take off poi's when driving around, when i am city centre of Pattaya cant see roads for the beer jugs, med centres etc. nuvi 205

Tools > Settings > Map > Map Detail

There you can adjust the amount of map detail shown on the map.

Does not get rid of the POIs by themselves. Map detail will get rid of the small sois along with the POIs, but then you don't have a detailed map remaining.

on mine there is somewhere a setting on which zoom level the POI can be seen.

If you set that to 50 or 20 meter than you are rid of it

thanks for the replies, will give them ago, great peice of kit for getting around the little sois in Pattaya and missing all the congested main roads.

I currently live in the US. I have a Garmin nuvi 660 with US North American Map. I noticed on the Garmin site that they have for sale a SEA map which includes Thailand. I think the price was around $125.00. Do I need to buy one of those here in the US or can I buy a Thailand map when I get there? Also..please....This Nuvi can use a SD card. Does the Thailand map come on a SD card, or do you need to download it into the GPS? If it has to be downloaded into the GPS does it overwrite the North American Map? Thank you

1. The City Navigator Southeast Asia NT map you get from Garmin comes on a plug & play microSD card.

2. The Thailand Street Map you get from ESRI (Thailand) Co., Ltd. comes on a CD and must be either loaded to GPS internal memory or transferred to microSD card. Both operations require a computer and miniUSB cord.

3. The Garmin map has better secondary road detail in the northern provinces if you are going to visit there, the ESRI map has better road detail around Bangkok. Either map will get you anywhere you want to go in Thailand.

4. Yes, any map downloaded to internal memory may overwrite the existing map - best/easiest to get your Thailand map on microSD card.

5. If you want the ESRI Thailand Street Map I recommend you take the GPS to a Garmin dealer in Thailand and have them install the English language map for you.
