As authorities delve into the rubble, the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) expands its scrutiny to include all companies involved in the building’s design, construction, and oversight, following startling allegations of a forged engineer's signature and business nominees masking as legitimate contractors. Justice Minister Police Colonel Tawee Sodsong and DSI chief Police Major Yutthana Praedam visited the tragic site on 16th April, overseeing the ongoing investigation. Among the two primary case threads, one spotlights the alleged use of fake business names to secure contracts, while the other revolves around the forgery of a veteran engineer’s signature, which purportedly authorised pivotal changes to the building’s design. The engineer at the centre, Somkiat Chusangsuk, whose name shows as the "project supervisor" for PKW Joint Venture, insists on his innocence, stating he left the role over two decades ago. He has launched legal proceedings and submitted substantial evidence to both the DSI and police, aiming to disassociate his identity from the project’s paperwork. Investigators are currently dissecting four significant contracts related to the building’s construction, drawing upon forensic expertise to differentiate between the forged and genuine signatures. Results from these analyses are anticipated within two weeks, potentially unraveling a web of deceit. Simultaneously, the nominee case demands resolution before further probing into the suspect contract bidding processes, ensuring each fraudulent element is meticulously dismantled. Engineering expert and emeritus professor Worasak Kanok-Nukulchai, from the Asian Institute of Technology, categorised this disaster as a "pancake collapse," where floors collapsed sequentially in a matter of seconds, leaving a trail of destruction that resulted in 44 confirmed deaths and 50 individuals still missing amidst the chaos. The investigation continues, with mounting pressure on the implicated firms as hopes for survivors dwindle and families await closure.
