Visa Run To Burma

Recommended Posts

I am in Thailand this time on a 30 day tourist visa and will need one extension

before I return to work, previously I have gone over to Cambodia for an extension but can not afford to use up a page and a half for this extension.

I am staying in Patum Thani approx 60/70 kilometres northwest of Bkk

and Burma looks a lot closer and have been told that visa runs are easy.

The man who told me this is not very reliable.

Can anyone give me info on border crossings available and requirements of Burmese immigration, I am married here and have all documents, and was also told by the same guy that with a marriage license I can get a two month extension on a 30 day tourist visa.

Mai Sot - They do not put in the large visa stamps in your passport, but I have only done this run using a Non Immirant O visa

1. I suspect you do not have a 30 day tourist visa - that you have a permission to stay stamp allowing you 30 days in Thailand - and that has no value for extension of stay from immigration and is not likely to be extended for more than 10 days.

2. Other than Mai Sot have not seen people posting about other crossings and Mai Sot often will want to see 10k in cash from frequent border 30 day stay people.

3. If you have a legal marriage I would get on train to Butterworth in Malaysia and obtain a non immigrant O visa from the Penang Royal Thai Consulate. Take marriage certificate and copy of wife id card. This can be a single entry if you plan an extension of stay after work starts - or a multi entry that lets you enter for 90 day visit for up to 15 months time. There is no visa required for most people to enter Malaysia so just normal stamps required but you will have to have a page for the Thai visa. You then can use this visa for a work permit later.

Other than what lopburi3 has already said about the marriage visa, I was in Ranong yesterday getting another 30 day stamp. It's really straightforward. They do not ask for proof of 10,000 Baht. It takes around an hour to make the crossing and back (if you don't want to shop) and Burma requires 5 US Dollars. If you havn't got that, then there are loads of touts at the pier who'll give you a note for 300 baht - on the Thai side.

Note, the crossing yesterday was quite rough, but not dangerous. Be prepared to get a bit wet. It rains a lot down there.
