Nokia Pc Suite

In Ubuntu 9.10 (and perhaps 9.04 and earlier), Series 60 phones are handled by the Network Manager. Unfortunately Series 40 is not as well supported. If you can grab packages and store them on a thumbdrive to install, it's fairly easy to get you up and running. I wrote this up a while ago and it should still be valid.

I found Gnome PPP in software applications it had Gnome PPP and Gnome PPPon. Both said not available in current data.

I downloaded gnome-ppp_0.3.23orit.tar.gz (on another computer and put it on a flash drive) and copied it to the desktop in Ubuntu 9.10. But I can’t figure out how to install it. I tried software catalog and terminal window and synaptic package manager but it just sits there and stares at me. sudo apt-get install /usr/share/apt-install/desktop/gnome-ppp and all sorts of other tries.

I have read at least a hundred other posts on other forums about nokia and ubuntu and posted questions but no one seems to answer them.

After reading the internet for 8 hours I figure out Ubuntu 9.10 uses a utility called pppconfig to configure modems. I connect to the internet with my Nokia 6303. My ISP is AIS 12call mobile life (I think).

These are the questions pppconfig asks me.

1. Is my ISP dynamic or static. (I don’t know)

2. Enter the IP number for your server. (Where do I find it?)

3. Enter the IP number for your secondary (Do I have one?)

4. Authentication Method for provider (PAP, Chat, Chap?) (I don’t know)

5. Enter your modem port speed (e.g. 9600, 19200, 38400, 57600, 115200). (I don’t know?)

6. Select method of dialing. Touch tone or pulse. (My phone does not dial anything?)

7. Enter the number to dial. (it doesn’t dial a number. It connects with nokia pc suite)

8. The port your modem is on identified automatically or enter the port your modem is on (example /dev/ttyS0 is COM1 in DOS.) (It is not on a port it is USB data cable.)

10. Password? Username? (I don't have one for my phone?)

Dynamic.

2. Enter the IP number for your server. (Where do I find it?)

202.183.255.20

3. Enter the IP number for your secondary (Do I have one?)

202.183.255.21

4. Authentication Method for provider (PAP, Chat, Chap?) (I don't know)

CHAP.

5. Enter your modem port speed (e.g. 9600, 19200, 38400, 57600, 115200). (I don't know?)

11520...unless it fails and then choose a lower one.

6. Select method of dialing. Touch tone or pulse. (My phone does not dial anything?)

Tone (I think?).

7. Enter the number to dial. (it doesn't dial a number. It connects with nokia pc suite)

And Nokia's PC Suite uses *99# to connect.

8. The port your modem is on identified automatically or enter the port your modem is on (example /dev/ttyS0 is COM1 in DOS.) (It is not on a port it is USB data cable.)

Most likely your phone is on /dev/ttyUSB0.

10. Password? Username? (I don't have one for my phone?)

Actually the ISP gets it from your SIM card; however some diallers need something there to pass along or they freak. I'm vain so I use my first name for both and they're ignored.

I'd still like to know if you tried using the network manager though; there should be a little icon in the area near your clock/calendar that you simply right-click on and choose "Edit Connections". Choose the Mobile Broadband tab. The Add button on the right side will allow you to create a new connection. If your phone is recognised it should be in the drop down box under the "Create a connection for this mobile broadband device". Click on Forward. Find Thailand, click Forward again. Make sure AIS is highlighted and one more Forward. Leave Select your plan on "Default" and choose Forward a final time. Apply should have you up and running.

Thank you for all the information. There is no “network manager” icon. There is a “network connections” under system, preferences.

I click that and although my phone was recognized when I plugged it in the USB by downloading its content it is not recognized by the “network connections” and when I go to the mobile broadband tab my phone is not there. I can create an AIS connection following the steps you outline but when I choose forward a final time after leaving the plan on default I get a screen that is titled AIS default 1. It asks if I want to connect automatically. Then it asks username, password. Advanced, APN, Network, Pin.

I filled out this form and checked connect automatically and when I click the internet icon it does not connect. I don’t think network connections recognizes my phone.

Excuse me. Re loaded the network manager icon in system startup and clicked on the icon. My phone was not in the broadband tab but was typed out on the screen to add a connection. I added everything and the network manager still showed not connected.

Thanks so much for all your help!

After I got the network manager icon working and started a new user I tried opening a browser in my phone before I tried connecting to the PC. With the browser and internet connection open the Network Manager accepts my connection and lets me log on. So I am on line now with Ubuntu 9.10.

So it works. Thanks again so very much.
